Senior trip - kid wants a cruise - Royal Caribbean vs MSC?

We have only done Disney, but the kid wants to do something different.

Looked at videos on the Icon of the Seas and MSC World America.

He liked the RC better from the quick research, but the prices… MSC is a full 1/3-1/2 cheaper at first glance.

What’s the general consensus here when comparing those cruise lines?

MSC ships are poor man’s copies of RCCL ships, but the price is great.

None of these lines will compare to Disney, but you’ll be fine on MSC. A buddy of mine took his family on one and they loved it.

Check out Norwegian, too. Carnival’s three newest ships: Mardi Gras, Celebration, and Jubilee are great for another option. (Don’t listen to the Board about Carnival. 7 day cruise crowds are fine. RCCL has had more fights breaking out lately, anyway.) Carnival’s ships aren’t quite as savvy as RCCL’s and the crowd is a party crowd. But their casual dining is easily the best at sea.

RCCL is much more expensive for providing the same amenities and worse food. But the entertainment is much better.

Icon of the Seas was a blast. Beautiful ship and nothing trashy about it at all. Tons of things for teens to do. Try to find a group rate — I found one at Crucon, although you can join an Icon focused facebook group and ask if anyone has one for your sailing as lots of travel agents participate in those groups. With the group rate, we paid half the normal RC rate.

based on what I saw on Oasis of the Seas (8 night cruise) this summer, being a HS senior dude on that should would be a lot of fun.

If all you've done is Disney, you'll likely be disappointed in the other options...

I wasn't a fan of MSC, even though it is plenty cheaper.
I'd take any of the others over it.

Disagree, kid is older. Unless they are Disney adults, Icon is better than the newer Disney ships unless you want Disney theming.

Disney has been faltering with the cruise ships lately. Their new ships have garbage layouts, and the new private island is severely lacking unless you feel like a really long pier walk. The food quality has dropped to standard cruise quality. It's not what it was anymore. Childcare for littles is still phenomenal but it doesn't sound like they have littles.

Coco Cay is still the superior private island.

MSC is starting to step up their game. Their food is getting better and some options are better than RCCL (which isn't great, it's cruise food) and World America is a great ship.

Icon's layout I don't think is as good as the Oasis class and I really really don't like the infinite balcony rooms, but it's an amazing ship with the newest of features. The shows on it are great and the indoor aqua show theater is nuts. You also get Coco Cay which is awesome.

I don't think you could go wrong with either. Look at the itenaries and shows and see what you prefer.

I went on a cruise for a senior trip many years ago and would highly recommend against it for a senior trip, unless you are spending most of your time docking and visiting locations.

Id say the same for all Oasis, Quantam and Icon class ships

It's not that they're "better" but for a senior trip they undoubtedly are and I 100% agree that Coco Cay > Castaway Cay.

The euro vs USA feel was evident. I thought RC would be significantly cheaper than Disney, but the gap is not as wide on the big boats.

We honestly don’t even disembark and choose to stay on ship, except for the cruise line island.

Oasis

Oasis is my favorite layout. Everything is organized so well and the pool deck has enough pools. I kinda wish they would make the Utopia but replace the solarium with the Icon water show version and slap in the surfside back onto it.

Oh double wave rider version too.

Royal Caribbean outta Galveston has been our go-to the last 3 trips.

Never had an issue and well worth what we paid.

Went on Carnival once outta New Orleans and so help me Little Baby Jesus that will never happen again.

Would never even risk it!

Margaritaville had FREE cruises for first responders, and we were going to take advantage of it. However, I saw some videos of a cruise and just knew that would be the one I'd be on.

I like to have a beer or 12, but for the most part I want clean, family fun.
