Should I buy an extended warranty on a new Lincoln Aviator? If so, Should I buy from the dealer or an independent company? Any suggestions for a reputable seller of an extended warranty? Thanks

I usually say no to warranties but it depends on how long you will keep the car. If you will own the car more than 5 years, I would say do the extended warranty if it’s less than $2000. Modern cars break constantly and even small things are expensive with everything being essentially a small computer.

It’s all markup from the dealer. Play hardball and negotiate and I would if it’s not that expensive

Just ask them why they are charging so much if they have so much faith in their product?

Some dealers will allow you to purchase it for the negotiated price up until the manufacturer's warranty expires. At least they have told me that.

I never buy them, but if I did it would be nice to see how the car holds up under base warranty before deciding whether to buy the extended.

I would be concerned about buying a new car and extended warranty, then one year later it gets totaled or you sell it because you hate it. Some dealers claim they will refund the prorated extended warranty fee in some circumstances like that, but I bet they don't just whip out the checkbook when you make a claim.

My new cars have mainly been Toyota and Honda that we keep 10 years or more. Even though it's not been that many cars, I would be many thousands in the hole if I had bought extended warranties on each of them. If I get hit with a huge repair bill one day, I'll still be way ahead of the game.

I bought the one on my recent Toyota. It gets me to 100,000 miles in five years. I was nervous about all the tech in cars now and the new Toyota engines.

I don’t really regret buying it. Only time will tell if it was wise.

If you are financing with a credit union, they usually offer extended warranties way cheaper than the dealership. We got a 100k bumper to bumper 0$ deductible for less than 2k$ on a 2023 tahoe.

I'd rather prepay for the additional maintenance plan than get an extended warranty.

Most models have a forum where people discuss the cars. Go there and you'll likely find the extended warranty everyone is getting. There will be one or two dealerships selling nationally at the lowest rate. You can still buy it months after purchase. I did this for a Telluride. Got the best price out of a NY dealership.

quick search on F-150 forum

Endurance is the best one. I got a 7k transmission in my truck. I paid 300 for it. I wouldn't buy anything else except Endurance.

lol wut? I haven’t had to bump start or spray carb fluid in order to get a car to start in anything I’ve owned since 1997.

Besides the power train warranty on almost every car will last you four or five years.

There are publications like Consumer Reports that share the data of repair histories. It helps identify makes and models more prone to repairs and those that simply do fine with routine maintenance.

Modern vehicles do not break constantly. From my perspective, they actually last longer. It’s now become much rarer to see vehicles broken down on the side of the road with the hood open. Even the tv trope of some hottie on the side of the road trying to flag down assistance just doesn’t work any more because vehicles are more reliable. I’ve never had a moment in my life when I wished I had spent thousands on extended warranties. I’m in my upper 50s and still have no idea why people keep throwing money at car dealerships for years after their initial purchase. Did they suddenly become charities in recent years?

How are these vehicle maintenance warranties being sold by elderly frontmen like Ice-T any different from a dealership’s extended warranty? They both sell them because they profit greatly from it. They do not keep doing it as an act of charity to help the consumer.

If you do, wait for them to make the offer on the warranty. Tell them its too expensive, they will lower, keep doing til they finally move on to something else and then take final amount.

We bought / buy new. 8 vehicles over lifetime and never had extended warranty.

Held new vehicles 10-11years. Earlier years we paid ourselves the note once the loan was paid off. Stacked up cash over time to pay cash for vehicles.

To say, the cash pile served, in part, as our warranty. Reality, just budgeted higher maint costs latter years of car life. Time value of money more than offset risk that warranty seeks to mitigate. In our experience.

They will tell you that they cannot change price of manufacturer warranties. They may have other service warranties offers that they will negotiate.

Essentially, these service warranties are just pre paid service at high margins for them.

I just bought one for my slightly used suv. It had under 10k miles and it basically reset the clock to 4 years 60,000 miles instead of the 2.5 years and 41,000 miles left.

Normally I don’t buy the extended warranty for most of my cars.

If you really believe it was slightly used, why now? Other than a Ferrari, I can’t imagine any concern for car maintenance at 10k miles.

I typically keep them for about 4 years until the warranty runs out and buy a new one. Didn’t want to drive it for 1.5 years without warranty.
