I was driving into work this morning, on a back road where the speed limit is 25, and the car in front of me was doing exactly 25. Were I not stuck behind that car, I'd likely be doing 45. It got me thinking, why is the speed limit 25 in that area? Which got me thinking further that I routinely ignore stuff like that without really considering why they posted a 25 mph speed limit.

I feel like that attitude is a thing that, mostly, only men have. The "I know better" attitude. Most of the time, I don't even know that I'm doing it, it just happens.

Speeding is minor, but what laws/rules do you ignore?

Yes, I’m not rich and can’t afford tickets and rise in insurance costs

This is like that dumbass stretch of the west part of Bluebonnet going down to 30mph, so half the traffic slows down to 30 and the other half is trying to get around them at 45. And of course they put the lazy radar bullshite on the side that does nothing. Absolute joke.

I run red lights at night when no one is around. I just don't understand sitting there for 5 mins waiting for nothing.

Edit I treat them as four way stops. then go

This company called the IRS sends me weird love letters like "you need to see us now" "please contact me" type stuff. They says its a "legal issue" but I'm pretty sure its a scam.

I didn't realize how many laws I actually break on the reg until I had kids. They call me out for speeding among other things. We have a golf cart that we take to the lake but we have to drive alongside a highway for a bit. There is always a cop looking to give out tickets so I have one of the kids pull up Waze to see whether or not he's there. We sat under a tree this past weekend for 30 mins waiting for him to leave and neither kid actually complained because they didn't wanna get popped by the po-po.

Everything is a risky analysis. Sometimes I bend a law based on the perceived risk vs the reward.

If you are talking about that stretch between Burbank river road, I loath driving down that part of bluebonnet. Also that’s the most blatant speed trap in the city. No reason for it to not be 45-50 mph.

For the most part. I do believe much of what we have creates a safer society. Far from perfect and we are not with as much power as the people need. On the other hand, people are really dumb

I only go into "civilization" maybe one day a week. I routinely go a week without seeing any people except for package delivery drivers and my wife.

So im kind of out of touch with society's rules. I make my own rules on my property and do my own thing.

From my limited time as a calcasieu parish civil engineer, I've gathered that speed limits are initially set by surveying traffic and observing average speeds, and rounding down accordingly. Of course there are other factors like number of lanes, medians, shoulder width, etc.

Then the real part takes place: locals bitching about people driving too fast and demanding the speed limit gets lowered on "their" road.

What do you mean by “blindly”?

Are you implying it is wrong to follow laws or rules?

Yes, Scruffy goes the speed limit.

Speeding will get me there 5 mins faster and I have the risk of getting a ticket where I have to give more of my hard earned money to the government.

frick that.

I set my cruise to 37 and enjoy the shortcut instead of Gardere. Always somebody zoomin' through past me, let them get popped. Harveston is gonna slow down the last stretch eventually

The neighborhoods on either side of that stretch have lined the correct pockets to get that speed limit. Their bullshite reasoning is that it's "one neighborhood" with a "pool area" so it needs this speed designation for the north side houses to get to the south side pool. Y'know despite there not being a single fricking crosswalk. Total joke.

Once upon a time, I lost a bunch of guns in the water, never to be found anymore.

But I'm now thinking it might be littering.

I know a guy who never gets an inspection sticker. I’m currently expired and need extensive repairs to get into compliance.
