BATON ROUGE — A new project that encourages people in Louisiana who receive federal food assistance to spend more on fresh fruits and vegetables will launch in five additional parishes, state officials announced.

People in Calcasieu, Jackson, Rapides, Terrebonne and Lafayette parishes who use Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits and shop at participating Walmart stores will get a 30-cent credit back on their electronic benefits transfer cards for every dollar they spend on fresh produce. The refund tops out at $25 a month.

quote:

“The project helps Louisianans stretch their food budget, but the broader goal is to improve health outcomes,” said Sammy Guillory, assistant secretary of family support with the Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services.

The program has distributed $280,000 in additional credits to SNAP recipients in Louisiana since it launched in April, according to the agency.

How generous of the taxpayers to pay 30% more if the recipients buy the things they should already be buying with the money.

I don’t mind this, especially since it’s capped at 25.00
I would prefer a complete overhaul of the system but it doesn’t seem like this could be overly abused with a 25.00 limit

Couldn’t they get the same result without bribing the by requiring a fixed percentage of SNAP go to fresh produce?

I mean, this looks like it’s just a kick back for Walmart with the exclusivity to it.

Yeah, the other way to do it is only make certain foods eligible for SNAP coverage in the first place. You want 6 two liters of Mountain Dew? Find the cash to pay for them.

And I assume that the credit goes onto their card and does not come back in the form of cash?

encouraging people to buy healthier foods and capping at $25/month which could have downline impacts on medicaid spending, etc doesn't sound terrible

Requiring people to buy healthier foods and capping at $0 extra/month which could have downline impacts on medicaid spending, etc sounds better

God we need to just stop all these food programs. It just incentivizes bad behavior.

Don't underestimate the ability to throw away a dollar to make a dime.

There is a long running scheme to abuse EBT by buying bottled water, emptying all the bottles in the parking lot, and returning the empty bottles for a credit. All for <$1 per case of water.

Even flipping burgers will net you more than that but people do it anyway

I do. The goal should be get people off EBT within 18-24 months not reward using it correctly. In fact, should be limited to fresh fruits and vegetables, rice, beans, dairy, chicken and cheaper cuts of meat. No seafood, no prime cuts, no candy and no snacks. Fruit juice, water and milk.

Unless Walmart is funding part of the veggie rebate out of their pockets.

“I don’t mind flushing money down the toilet as long as it’s just a little bit of money”

You should be against all waste of public money. Because when things are scaled, even pennies can become millions of dollars.

water

Water is the first thing that should be cut because it’s the only thing that is already provided either for free or heavily subsidized right out of the tap.

Bottled water wasn’t even a thing until the last 25 years. I’m 57 and never drank bottled water until I was an adult.

Why is this something that should be included in public food benefits?
