Tom Brady looks at today’s college football landscape — flooded with transfers and NIL dollars — and wonders if a player like him would’ve stuck it out at Michigan. What he's certain of, though, is that he’s not happy with where the college game is today.

In 2025, Michigan def let’s senior Brady walk to start Drew Henson and Brady goes over to an SEC team needing a QB

Kurt cousins said something similar about his time at Michigan State. Like would he have hung around?

Probably not. Brian Hoyer was the starter and Nick Foles transferred because he lost the backup QB job to Cousins and 5 star Keith Nichol transferred in after losing the job at Oklahoma to Sam Bradford. Then 4 star Andrew Maxwell committed so he might have left then too.

Why is it a bad thing that players leave schools to find more immediate playing time if it's offered elsewhere?

College is a 4-year tryout for the NFL, you have to maximize that time.

Nussmeir hung around. It isn’t illegal. Obviously less likely but it can happen

But a kid that isn’t getting playing time leaving to me actually is a good result of the transfer portal. You only have 4 years to play

My take on it is, if I as a college student can sit there for a year and realize this college is not the right fit for me, then transfer my credits to a college I think is a better fit and continue my career there; why can't the players do something similar.

Where is gets tricky is when you have players transferring multiple times over 4-5 years. If I recall correctly, as a student you can do that except you need the last XX hours to be at the school you are graduating from to be considered an alumnus - if you care about that sort of thing. Of course, 3-4 schools on a resume may not be very enticing to companies looking to interview you.

I don't really have an opinion one way or the other, but sometimes sticking it out in a less than ideal situation builds mental toughness.

Joe Burrow will most likely make over $500 million as a NFL QB before he's retires

all of that never happens if he stays at Ohio State

Yes, but you can't ignore the flipside of that circumstance.

Agreed. It worked for Brady, but the flipside worked for Burrow, hence why I don't really have a strong opinion either way.

I think we will see a system where promising QBs will migrate from G5 teams to P5 teams and vice versa. Playing time is crucial and if you have a decent season at a G5 school then you can likely cash in with a QB-needy P5 school.

I think it's just speaking to the mentality that some have that a player should stick it out wherever they initially chose to play, and if they can't get on the field there, then they must not be good enough.

They can’t learn anything and coaches can’t teach anything so the NFL gets watered down players and have to run backyard offenses with young QBs.

Brady is the ultimate outlier. Saying it worked for him is like expecting a team that takes a QB in the 6th round to find SB winning QB

If he did transfer and started somewhere maybe he gets drafted higher? Then again if it’s not New England who knows how it turns out?

QBs transferring is not new. Brandon Stewart signed with Tennessee in 1994. After losing out to Peyton Manning he transfered to Texas A&M where he started for 3 years and won a Big XII title

Brady 100% would have transferred to a Washington State or something his sophomore year then back to an SEC school his senior year after performing for two years. It’s wild how many kids not just transfer once but twice now, in all sports
