I'm so dumb.

I've been on the weight loss roller coaster my whole life.

Tried every diet imaginable.

Except for the one that actually works.

I believed all the hype around low carb, keto, insulin being the key.

I rejected calorie counting because I found a few "gurus" who didn't agree with it.

Weirdly I'd hear about people losing weight while still eating carbs and I would just look away. It didn't make sense. They had to be lying.

For 38 years of my life I struggled with my weight and not a single time tried a GD calorie deficit.

Honestly, I don't remember the catalyst for me trying it about 1.5 years ago.

I downloaded the GOAT tracking app - MacroFactor. Sure, others work but it's the only one I know of that really focuses on the thermodynamics things and calculates your TDEE based solely on the body weight and calories you log. If you're trying to lose weight by being in a calorie deficit, MacroFactor is easy mode. You don't have to hope your online TDEE calculator is right, you KNOW your exact TDEE because of science and whatnot.

In the past year and a half I've lost 61 pounds.

I'm in the best shape of my life.

Now I'd say the calorie thing is like 95% of the game. The rest is making sure you get enough protein (I shoot for 200g a day) so you lose fat and not muscle, enough fiber, lift 3x per week, and food quality.

Oh and another benefit of eating high protein and high fiber is you can be in a 500 calorie deficit and not be hungry.

Anyway, I feel dumb because it really is stupid simple. I'm not sure why I ignored so many smart people for so long.

It's crazy the tens of thousands of "diets" that exist.

Track what you eat, KNOW your TDEE, and go on a CALORIE EFFING DEFICIT.

It works. Every. Single. Time.

Here's my progress pics, ya pervert. 180 was my goal but now that I'm here I'm going to lose 10-15 more pounds. 6 pack by my 40th birthday? Why not. I'm not guessing and hoping anymore.

You should post this on the OT, over here on the Fitness Board we constantly tell people this

Seriously, congratulations on finally getting a handle on your weight, that's amazing!

Fad diets work because at the end of the day they push you into a calorie deficit, they usually don't work long term because they do it in a way that our brains do not like.

The biggest thing for a lot of people is realizing how many calories they are consuming via liquids, at the end of the day I see liquid calories as a HUGE factor in people 1) Not being able to lose weight, and 2) Gaining weight and not knowing why

- calorie deficit
- prioritize protein
- lift weights

the 3 simple steps to looking and feeling better that people, for some reason, try too over complicate

I'd also add to make sure to get an adequate amount of fiber, but otherwise yea, just this. Fiber and protein make it much easier to stick to your calorie deficit, which is a main reason to prioritize them (among other obvious ones).

Well, when half of fitness social media tries to make it more complicated or openly scolds folks for simply utilizing a calorie deficit (but still eating what they like in moderation). That doesn't help anyone who doesn't have that knowledge on their own.

We probably see this more on the women's side of fitness with shaming over eating certain types of food and so on.

Tell me more of this macro factor. I frickin hate counting calories and calculating macros. This sounds exactly like what I need. I’m 183 lbs with a lot of muscle but have had a spare tire around my waist for a long time now. I need to maintain my weight but lose fat (everyone’s pipe dream, I know)

high protein and high fiber

This x1000

Man when I started tracking my protein and aimed for 180-200g per day, I didn't bother with tracking fiber.

After a few days, I paid a painful price

Lesson learned, though. If you're consuming a lot of protein, you better counter it with enough fiber.

“Counting calories” and macros is bs

Y’all are literally peasants eating gruel because the box is pretty and because shaq tells you to

You can literally eat pounds a day of gross things like lettuce and deer meat and carrots and never gain weight but y’all hate it because it doesn’t have the dyes you like

All you have to do is eat things that look like food

Congrats!

The reality is that it takes about 5 mins of research to figure this out. Everybody knows how to do it….its just having the willpower to actually do it over an extended period of time is the hard part.

Go and start eating 4,000 calories of things that look like food a day and let me know how that goes for you.

Way more but what's your point? You just said you can eat lbs of gross stuff and be fine and not gain weight. Not sure why you limited yourself to just lettuce when in your previous post you didn't, weird pivot, but go for it.

Eat 4000 calories a day of whatever you want and let us know how things turn out.

To get to 4000 calories you’d have to eat 5.7 pounds of deer meat

Even the people that pretend to like deer meat better than beef because they don’t like their families would struggle to eat 4000 calories of deer meat in a day

4000 calories is like 4 cookies or one bag of chips or 4 cokes

You've done a wonderful job of illustrating why calorie counting and sticking to a calorie deficit is far easier done when eating real food. Thank you for that.

What you've failed to do is actually show that calorie counting is BS, as your initial post claimed.
