Same showrunner, but if there's no Coach Taylors, Mrs. Taylor, and Tim Riggins, is it really Friday Night Lights?

quote:

"We want to do it with a whole new cast, but obviously there’ll be football in it," teased Berg, who is executive-producing the project alongside Brian Grazer and Kristen Zolner. "But the original show was done a long time ago. There were no cell phones. No social media. It was a very different world, and yet the same values still exist, and the same family dynamics exist."

He continued: "Football’s only grown in its relevance in communities all over the country. So the core themes of Friday Night Lights—that were revealed by Buzz Bissinger when he wrote the book — are very much present. There’s just so many new elements, so we want to look at that. And if certain cast members come back, have appearances, that’s great. But if Friday Night Lights works, it’ll be because it works as a reinvention."

Today I learned the original aired in the time slot right after the first few seasons Beverly Hills, 90210.

No social media

There's literally a storyline in the first season about slut shaming Lyla on the internet. It was a website and not snapchat but still.

Exactly
The characters may not have used them but Facebook and MySpace were both rolling with millions of users before the first episode aired and by the time season one ended the iPhone had launched or was just about to.

It will be hard sell with no coach Taylor but this is the show runner that flipped over almost a whole group of main characters and made me care about the new ones. That’s not easy to do.

It really is amazing how they switched from the Dillion characters to the East Dillion characters and the show never skipped a beat.

I just dont see how this show works without all of us wanting to just go watch the original again instead. But a friday night lights for a new generation isnt the worst thing I guess, although we'll all end up recommending they just go watch the original

The show ended nearly 15 years ago. High School Freshman weren't even alive during the original run. I promise it will find an audience with a new generation.

True. Think I've watched FNL 3 times and the East Dillon stuff gets better and better each time I watch.

I'm not saying it would be good

But just let Sheridan do it and they would print money

No thanks. Just let him stay on Paramount+ writing the same story for 10 different shows.

Not saying this is going to be good either, and it certainly didn't need a reboot, but at least the creator has shown he can tell a good high school football story and not make it a soap opera. Twice now.

Tim Riggins was one of my favorite characters in the history of TV.
