Erickson: Trump pauses study on Old River Control Structure

From his newsletter today
quote:
The National Weather Service, in the run up to the peak of Hurricane Season, is rehiring over 100 critical roles that DOGE cut from the NWS. But there’s actually a bigger and far more critical cut that needs to be reconsidered by the President.
The Trump Administration has paused an Army Corps of Engineers review of the Old River Control Structure.
You have probably never heard of it. You have not, because it works. If it fails, not only will you hear about it, but it will be one of the most catastrophically disruptive economic events in American history. The Old River Control Structure keeps the Mississippi River from spilling over into the Red River and down into the Atchafalaya River Basin in South Louisiana.
As nature is prone to do, running water seeks efficient paths. It would be very efficient for the Mississippi River and the Red River to merge near Lettsworth, LA. The only thing keeping that from happening is the Old River Control Structure. If the Army project collapses, the rivers merge, South Louisiana floods, and most of the nation’s oil and gas refining capacity disappears within a week. Barge traffic up the Mississippi ends. Drinking water for millions is profoundly altered.
Here’s the problem. The Army Corps of Engineers was in the middle of a serious study on updates and alterations to the very, very old facility. That study has been paused indefinitely. It needs to be resumed immediately. The economic consequences to the American economy would be profound if something happens and the five year study is desperately needed.

2 months 2 late, pal
But you wanted to use it to attack Trump, so its never too late for that, amirite?

A major federal study on the future of the lower Mississippi River examining effects in Louisiana and six other states has been paused due to a lack of funding, reports NOLA.com.
Separately, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineer said its New Orleans district was losing around 80 of its 1,160 employees to early retirement or deferred resignations — allowing them to go on leave until the end of the fiscal year before departing — as the Trump administration seeks to cut federal spending

That study better show the rule that someone from the Murray family must always have a job at the hydroelectric station or it’ll be anarchy.

Voted for Trump three times so go frick yourself, white trash.
First I've seen this pause mentioned, hence why I've posted it. Not like I've seen it mentioned here before.
Problem with scumbags like you is you can't handle any criticism or questioning from your own side. No better than progressive nut jobs.

I would suggest that if the study is a priority, than the ACOE can eliminate spending on non priority matters to conduct the study. This is an inherent problem with all federal agencies and departments. They do not prioritize spending, rather they ask for more money. At some point , they have to be held fiscally accountable for expenditures.

They have been prophesying bad things about the old river control structure before it became the old structure.

This. That being said, nature eventually will find a way. The study should be on how to begin to slowly and safely allow the river to do enough of what it wants to do without dramatically impacting humanity. How much flow can be allowed to naturally go to the red river before New Orleans is affected? How can we manage the red river to take that flow in a path and way that will not destroy the industry and communities there?
Take away enough pressure so the ORCS isn't a ticking time bomb for a few more centuries.

Then why was this your title?

Trump pauses study
Because Erick Erickson told you so? Dumbass
The Corp of Engineers made this decision based on the budget they were given. But you wanted to blame Trump. Because a NeverTrumper that you subscribe to (even tho you voted for Trump 3 times) told you so

So the people doing the study actually only care about their paychecks and not the eminent critical issue of completing the study and saving millions of Americans and hundreds of billions of economic structure?
Posted on 8/7/25 at 11:48 am to prplhze2000
So fix the structure instead of studying it for 20 years at 3.6 billion dollars.
Posted on 8/7/25 at 11:50 am to prplhze2000
There is no reason to take 5 years to study. WTF

Well, there is when it is how you fund your cronies... CoE is historically corrupt and inept....

Exactly...and that's why it was halted. The fat will be trimmed and actual working individuals will be installed to complete in half that time and half the money

We covered that already

Hasn't this been continually monitored since forever?
How many brains have been in charge of that part of the river each year since, say, 1950? What have they produced?
