Why did Tweety Carter not come to LSU?

I was too young to keep up with anything recruiting related at the time Tweety Carter left Reserve to go play college ball. Just recently discovered Tweety Carter is the All Time leading scorer in Men’s HS Basketball History.

Come to find out his HS career and even college career are pretty remarkable. Played 6 years of Varsity for Reserve Christian, 7th grade-Senior Year. Won 4 State Championships. Reserve posted a
248-69 record during his time. Holds the All Time record for most 3’s in a single season in HS ball. Even if you take away his middle school years, he still ranks second ever in most points scored while having a classification of a High Schooler. He ends up an All American, and was ranked as the #1 or #2 player in the state depending on what service you look at.

LSU was just coming off a Final 4 run when Tweety left for College. What gives? Was it because of his size? Wanting to get out of state? Tweety Carter was the first ever All American to attend Baylor. He ended up leading them to the Elite 8 his Senior Season. Pretty solid career at Baylor averaging 11 points, 2 rebounds, 3 assists, over 131 games and 4 seasons.

The reason I ask is because I just found out about Carter’s accolades, and it shocks me LSU let the All Time leading scorer in the History of HS Basketball, an All American, and the best player in the State with a winning resume, up and leave to Baylor who hadn’t had a winning record in 6 years, while LSU was coming off a Final 4 Run. Scott Drew didn’t get Baylor off the ground well into Carter’s College Career. It looks like Carter has been on the Baylor staff for the past 3 seasons.

LSU allegedly didn’t offer him because John Brady thought he was too small.

I played against tweety in high school, not a fun experience

Did not play against Tweety, but seen him play many times.

One of the best experiences was at the UNO Camp we watched Tweety vs DJ Augustin, one of the best in person basketball "watches" I've ever had. It was awesome. Pure Hoops.

Tweety was the beginning of the Reserve to Baylor pipeline.

They had a few more from that area make their way out there.

I don't believe the "too small" antics as John Brady had many small guards during his time, Darrell Mitchell, Tack Minor etc.

Ahh the good ole days

LSU isn’t exactly known as a great basketball school. Some kids want to carve out their own path or get away from their past. Baylor was on the rise at that time.

He was a good college player, but certainly not a huge miss by any stretch

Played against him in the championship of the SELU team camp.

Before the game coach said Carter will pull it from anywhere. Ball is tipped to Carter he proceeds to take 1 dribble across half court and hits one from 30’.

It was a long afternoon. Pure shooter.

Watched a game at NO Arena, Reserve vs Brother Martin. Was fun watching Tweety against DJ. I don’t remember who won. The deal even came with free nosebleed tickets to the Hornets vs Kings game that night. Met Ryan Perrilloux while in line and asked him if he’s really going to Texas. Said “Yeah…” but in a way you could tell if he was basically fricking with LSU fans

Even before this (mid-late 90's), Reserve was in a Christian school league (along with LCA, my school). At least at LCA, let's just say that if your parents were "true believers" (have no idea if this influenced his decision), they wanted you to go to a "Christian" college.

Darrell Mitchell, while small, was a ton more athletic than Carter, and Tack Minor was a tank.
Now Ben Voogd was small and a waste of a scholarship.
There's no reason Brady shouldn't have given a hometown kid a chance, not that Carter would have even wanted to play for him.

I played against him when I was a senior and he was a freshman. He was way too small at that time to do anything against us. We kicked their arse twice and I don't think he scored 10 points combined in those 2 games.
And no I'm not saying he wasn't good, he just wasn't good enough at that time against real competition. he was literally a little kid who might have weighed 110lbs at the time playing against much stronger, faster and athletic young men. Looking back on it, i feel bad how we treated him. He was 14 or 15 years old while we're 18 and we're calling him Twiggy b/c of how small he is and talked shite to him the entire game, granted there was a ton of hype about him even at that young age and whoever they played the game before us in the tourney they beat by like 50. He probably had his shot blocked 12+ times in that first game against us.
He was obviously a very good player as he got older, and I followed him at Baylor. He made a good decision to go to Baylor, much better choice than going to LSU, and I say that as someone who bleeds purple and gold, but that was about the worse time you could have gone to LSU, right after the final four run.

good not great college player. he scored loads of points in hs because he was a great shooter and his team played against lots of small schools.

augustin was a much bigger miss as evidenced by his tenure in the league.

My memory is absolutely terrible, but was he in the same class as Tack Minor? Could that have been the reason we weren't so hot on Tweety?

He was a great player and one of the flat out best shooters I’ve ever seen in person. But he was definitely limited size wise and was a liability on defense. He racked up a lot of stats against really bad small schools but he showed he could play with anybody.

Katrina really screwed that up. Didn’t leave Texas after he had to relocate.

waste of scholarship on a 6' white dude who wasn't even that good from Oregon when there were plenty of kids on TOPS that could have walked on and not even needed a scholarship and were better than him.

That idiot was recruiting a 6' white dude from Oregon instead of Carter.

and Tack Minor should have been playing football. He was fast as frick and strong. I've played against just about every single basketball and football player from LSU in that 2003-2008 time period, and outside of Joe Addai, Tack was the strongest guy i've played against. He was like a bowling ball, an out of control hot headed bowling ball.

Who'd you play for?

I am a 02' grad from Reserve Christian, and was a senior the for our 1st State Championship (Tweety was an 8th grader). Stayed really close to the program after I graduated.

I don't remember anyone shutting Tweety down his freshman year - and definitely not twice.

Played against him in 03-04 (Midland High) in the quarterfinals I believe. Dude was a stud. We were up around 8-10 at halftime. He came out in the 3rd and just unleashed on us. Our playoff run ended that night lol
