My senior stepson and his friends are going to Caney lake to swim and hangout for senior week tomorrow. My wife is super paranoid about a lot of stuff and is worried about brain eating amoeba. She might not let him go, what legitimate and logical reason can I tell her to get her chill. And no just saying that won’t happen to him won’t work.

Yeah we both did honestly I blame the media/news because they make is seem like it’s a way bigger problem than ever before like they do with most things.

Tell her it hasn’t been hot enough nor dry enough locally yet this year. That if the water was lower and the temperature higher resulting in concentrating the water then you might be concerned too.

So far this year I have only seen a couple of cases out of Florida, Georgia, and North Carolina.

To reduce the risk of infection: Avoid swimming in warm freshwater during hot weather.
Use nose clips or keep your head above water in lakes and hot springs.
Ensure swimming pools are well-maintained and properly chlorinated.

Reading more including the NC kid that died recently there’s 2 killers in swimming waters: flesh eating bacteria and the brain eating amoeba.

In addition to the previous post: the flesh eating bacteria it’s only found in brackish water.

The brain eating amoeba is only in fresh water.

Both are temperature sensitive becoming more common during actual heat waves when the water temperature rises. It also appears that some kind of disturbance in the water (floods/droughts, sudden temperature spikes) triggers population growth.

Both are present in the water and soil but rarely cause infection. Only 34 cases total were reported to the CDC from 2008-2017.

Stepped on an ear ring and found a poney tail in that lake when I was around 10. Good times

Chances of it happening are extremely small however, a 13 yr old boy in Columbia SC just died from that by swimming in Lake Murray .

Yeah, I read about that. I feel for his parents. I have to say, we camped at Lake Thurmond just a few weeks ago and when I went swimming the water was pretty much hot. And I mean not just bath water warm, downright hot feeling.

I have to admit that amoeba was on my mind because I really don't remember the water being that hot before and we go several times every year. We were at a different campground though because the one we usually go to is still closed from the hurricane, so that might be why

I’d be more worried about an alcohol related injury or fatality.

I wouldn't worry about the brain eating amoebas. He's more likely to get cellulitis in an open wound.

I’m so glad I didn’t grow up in an era with social media and cell phones.

Tell her that theres really nothing to worry about. Statistically they say you're more likely to get killed on the way to the lake. You know, like on a head on crash or flying off a cliff or getting trapped under a gas truck. That's the worst.

From what I understand they were up in a cove with little water movement. Also, kids have a tendency to get water up their nose. As long as you’re in more open water you should be fine. There are so many people in Murray every weekend this was definitely an isolated occurrence.

My son did it last year and all was fine. I have a wife that worries about everything as well, but he will be fine. Let the boy live a little.
