Always a hot topic here! What is legal and what isn't!
My favorite, July toss out cracked corn and bird seed, Right about 3 weeks before the season. Disc it in really good.
Get that ground worked really good, and top sow that wheat about 10 days prior to the season.
Show your work if its legal!

My sunflowers that I planted in the spring completely failed.

May be legal in MS but I wouldn’t hunt over uncovered wheat in LA. It’s a grey area but not worth green jeans busting that arse. We plant millet in May. My buddy has a 6 acre Millet field. We start cutting it 2 weeks before first split. It’s covered in doves right now.

I had planted 6 acers of sunflowers. They came in great, had a few deer browsing them. They got to about 12" tall and in two nights the deer mowed all 6 acres to the ground. Sprayed it and started over with millet. Millet looks great, going to start cutting straps into it in another two weeks. This is pearl river county MS

Not so gray anymore. The federal appellate court for TX, LA, and MS had a case out of LA in 2023.
The fellow top seeded wheat in August in contravention of LSU Ag Center's recommendations in its pamphlets to plant Sept 1 or later, use one inch of soil cover, and plant only to a certain density. He shot doves over the wheat, and he got busted.
The fellow argued that MS State's pamphlet would allow his method, but the court said, "You ain't in Mississippi, boy." Also, he introduced only a part of the MS State pamphlet, and the government said that the rest of the pamphlet made clear that what he did would not fly in MS either.

Sounds like you need some help with that deer problem this fall! If you need some extra guns for the deer or the dove don't be afraid to give me a shout!

Know YOUR states law. People argue with me every year that its not legal.
North LA should really have different dates than the rest of the state for planting wheat. If Ark and MS Ag center says it is normal ag practice to top sow in Aug it should be considered in North LA.
Most of the grazing fields for cattle are hunted over in september, top sowed wheat. December they are green as can be.
Didn't that dumb arse, top sow wheat multiple times before the season?

We got lucky last year with late harvested corn and a rain situation that produced grass in some areas but not others. The birds flocked to the open ground parts like it was baited. Best hunt I have had in many, many years.

3yrs ago I had a great stand of them. Had a ton of birds in the field. Cold front moved through 3 days prior to the hunt and they all left.

I try them every year. This year I some in rows, those failed miserably. I just sowed some and they did awesome! All the rain made it hard to keep the grass down in them.

My uncle used to have a 15 acre dove field,did the top seeded wheat thing.
Most years had a decent hunt.In Grant Parish.
One year it was looking bad,very few doves day before.A front moved through N.La.Friday and Saturday had more doves than I’ve ever seen before.
He made us quit before 5:30 because he was sure we were over the limit.
Doves were still pouring in when we left.
We ended up with 500 for 17 hunters so right at 30 per person.This was in the 90’s,past the statute of limitations.

They use a scoop now, or did a few years ago. Better hope you disc all those sunflowers and bird seed deep!

They have started cutting corn around my buddy's place in Gilbert. (Franklin Parish). The power lines behind his house are sagging with doves. Last year had the best hunt in twenty years. Flight birds in 10 - 12 bird groups cruising by at just under mach 1. I don't deer hunt, but live for this!
