What is the tRant’s opinion overall of this QB? I feel that he was a serviceable QB in the Mile’s era. He wasn’t great, but we leaned heavy on the run in those years with Fournette and Guice as the RB in those years.. I know he only averaged around 200 yards per game, but he didn’t throw many INT. We all know Les wasn’t ever going to pass much after the JJ/JL debacle (Mett was an outlier).
Interested to hear y’all’s thoughts..

Was above average and a class act

I think Etling was the best QB of the Miles era, and I’m not forgetting Mett.

He was a breath of fresh air compared to the days of Anthony of Jennings and Brandon Harris who preceded him.

I guess JaMarcus Russel and Matt Flynn do not count.

That is dumb.

You’re dead right about Flynn and Russell. I forgot about them.

His offensive coordinators in his 2 seasons as a starter here were Cam Cameron (fired 4 games into his 1st year along with Les and his bullshite) and Matt Canada. That’s as bad a coaching situation as it realistically gets. Add that while not terrible, his targets were below the traditional WRU standard (Dupre, Chark, Dural, Gage, Sullivan)
"He wasn't great" is arguably insulting considering he was not remotely set up for success. Not sure many of the good QBs in the SEC at the time (Lock, Fromm, Stidham, Hurts) would have fared any better. He was never going to lead the conference in passing but history will continue to trend kinder on his legacy

I feel like he would be remembered a lot more had Burrow not arrived right after him.

Underrated. Put him with any real OC and he’s up there with the others that year.

Smart player, hard worker, great kid
I'm not sure you could win a championship with a team full of Danny Etlings, but you wouldn't have off-the-field problems, academic problems, drug problems, etc., that come with more talented players.
And you would win a lot of games by outsmarting/outworking the opposition.
Bottom line: I got no complaints about Danny Etling.

Average college QB but he was perfect to help make the transition into a newer offense. He could do a little bit of everything and was coachable.

I'll disagree about not having targets.. Chark was good when the offense was changed to actually throw down the field.. Dural did have moments when he wasn't hurt.. Dupre was a disappointment.. Sullivan was a tweener that was lost in the shuffle..

Your own description of his targets basically lays out exactly what he said about them.:

While not terrible, his targets were simply not at the WRU standard (Dupre, Chark, Dural, Gage, Sullivan)

He was actually really good, just stuck in a really shitty coaching situation.
Who knows what he would’ve developed into given a more stable environment.
What I’ll never forget about him is that the kids was tough as nails! He took so many shots over the course of 2017 and showed true toughness getting up off the turf.

One of many potential great QB's that the serpent (Les) bit. What a shame.
