Name an otherwise mediocre song that gained a lot of notoriety by getting played in movies

I'll offer up
The Cars " Moving in Stereo"
Made extra famous by being played during the infamous Phoebe Cates pool scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High
What say you? Add television as well.

Bohemian Rhapsody
It was just some forgotten f@g shite from the '70s
Then that Wayne's World crap came out and suddenly it was a masterpiece and Queen was the GOAT instead of some forgotten English kweers

Danger Zone from Top Gun.
Would not have been the same song without that movie at all.

Probably was big without Risky Business, love Seger but this song stinks

Good call, Bob Seger was so embarrassed that he refused a writing credit. That song blows.

Stuck in the Middle with You from Reservoir Dogs comes to mind.

Never change Kafka. Never change.

I take that as a personal insult, but I’m a huge cars fan. I think that band is perfect and their self titled debut album The Cars is a masterpiece.

That song wouldn't have existed without the movie, as it was written by Giorgio Moroder and Tom Whitlock specifically for the movie. The same deal with Take My Breath Away. Neither of these songs are mediocre.

All I'll say is that I liked Bryan Adams for the most part until Robin Hood: Prince of Kansas came out.

“Life is a Highway” in the Pixar movie Cars (2006). I feel like that song only became popular because of the movie

You couldn't avoid Tom Cochrane's arse for a few months in the early 90s.

The original sold about two million records for Tom Cochrane in 1991.

Thanks for clarifying. I’m younger so I had no clue until today.

Que? That song was big prior to WW. Are you being sarcastic?

Other than that song, you might recognize Tom from his vocals on "Lunatic Fringe" by Red Rider.
