Looking to get either a roof rack cargo container or a tailgate container for my wife’s telluride for trips. Can’t decide which one would be better for us. Anyone have any recommendations and what has worked best for them?

We have a shelf that mounts in the receiver and a dry bag that fits it. I don't know the brand, but they are great. When I fuel up for hurricanes I use it without the dry bag, when we go places with drinks, I just leave the ice chest on the back, its almost like having a mini bed.

If I were you and you would be happy with either, maybe go with the tailgate container. Seems easier to deal with than a roof rack.

I would use the the tailgate platform
It is easier to install pack and un load.

Yeah unless you plan on towing at the same time I’d go for the hitch mounted cargo rack

This. I had a roof rack many years ago and it was a PITA to access.

Roof rack carriers are great if you are just looking to transport and unload at destination. Just bring a step stool to access.

A trailer hitch Carrier is better for ice chests and stuff you want to access immediately.

Depends on what you want it for, both are fairly simple installs

I’ve had the rooftop type and the tailgate box, and the tailgate one is much better. No wind noise, no parking garage height issues, and easily accessed. The one I have is a hard shell that locks, and protects from rain.

Tell your wife to pack less. Sorry for the attitude but I can go away for a week with one medium size bag.

The aluminum hitch cargo rack from Harbor Freight is excellent for the price. I can use it on my golf cart too.

If you go with a hitch mounted one you better figure out how to relocate the license plate with a light on it so it can be seen or be prepared to be pulled over.... often. I ended up putting a mount on the frame of the carrier, mounting a license plate light with a wire that would plug into the trailer light plug. We got pulled over on 10 in Vidor one night when headed to So TX hunt, they went through the whole damn Tahoe like we running drugs, even ran the serial numbers on my guns.

I recently got a hitch mount cargo basket with a bike rack on the back. Check out [link=(Discountramps.com)]LINK[/link]

I’ve got a pair of Plano storage trunks that are waterproof and some ratchet straps. Haul all my camping gear when I take the boys camping. I could easily throw a few soft suitcases in there for normal travel.

Depends on what you're bringing. Big and bulky needs a tailgate container.

Several years ago we bought a flip up hitch carrier from Northern Tool for under $200. Then bought a rainproof bag the size of the carrier (also under $200). Used it a lot and the cargo was dry when we got to where we were going when driving thru rain. The bag is collapsable so doesn't take up much space once at your destination. Once you arrive and empty the continents, flip the hitch carrier up for easy parking. Don't need a ladder to get to the roof, economical, and worked well for us with three kids in tow. Haven't used it in a few years but the bag is still in great shape and has not turned brittle. While we have never had nor borrowed a roof carrier, they seem like a lot of trouble to me. Just my opinion.

If going this route also buy a hitch hauler lock.

The hitch cargo carrier is the most versatile solution. But check where your exhaust comes out because that can be an issue.

Hitch mounted. Harbor freight has some that have really good reviews and not that expensive. They have an aluminum one so it won’t rust.
