The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is shutting down its operations after the loss of federal funding, marking the end of almost six decades as the entity that distributed grants to public media, PBS and NPR.

The CPB informed employees on Friday that the majority of staff positions will end on Sept. 30, with a small transition team in place through January, 2026. The CPB has around 100 employees.

Patricia Harrison, the president and CEO of CPB, said in a statement on Friday, “Despite the extraordinary efforts of millions of Americans who called, wrote, and petitioned Congress to preserve federal funding for CPB, we now face the difficult reality of closing our operations. CPB remains committed to fulfilling its fiduciary responsibilities and supporting our partners through this transition with transparency and care.”

As Stirling Moss' young son said after Stirling took him on a vigorous drive "It makes my willie tingle!".

This is the bed they made by choosing partisan politics over neutral programming.

Why aren't wealthy celebrities and businesses tycoons like the Waltons filling this gap?

They are.

What's going to happen is that the public stations in large, mostly blue, cities will continue to operate on member contributions, the rural stations that lack the sheer number of members will shut down. NPR and PBS will still get funding from the urban stations. For example, WRKF in Baton Rouge just had an extra fund drive this summer to make up for the 10% of their funding lost by defunding CPB.

I hope someone will pick up Antiques Roads Show.
I suspect most of the more popular shows like Sesame Street and Inside Lens will continue in some way. Hell, aren’t these stations mainly funded by endowments and grants, as well as large corporate donations/tax write offs?

It served it's purpose but technology has erased that purpose.

Anyone can broadcast with a low budget on YouTube, Rumble and others these days.

that part

the real interesting transition will be how will the surviving stations get their programming, especially the nationally distributed shows that most recognize (NOVA, Antiques Roadshow, Frontline, News Hour etc on the PBS side, All Thjngs Considered, Morning Edition, etc on the NPR side)

the little known secret is that the majority of the Fed funding that CPB distributes to the member stations goes not for local operations, but instead is sent right back to PBS/NPR for rights to air these programs

many PBS stations have been aware of the possibility of this system being dismantled and have always had contingency plans for when it happens - many others pretended it never would, and those are the ones that will be at the greatest risk of going dark

So sad. Those rural people will no longer be able to get weather reports or emergency disaster declarations, lol.

i’ve met her in person - she is definitely not what you imagine a person in her position would be like

she’s an 85 year old hardassed Brooklyn wop with a wicked sense of humor, and is a real kick to be around, totally unlike the majority of the insufferable idiots who work in the organizations below her

All you had to do was pump the breaks on the insanity and aim down the middle to keep your jobs.

Sounds like she should have been a better leader and gotten rid of those idiots years ago.
