New property tax relief legislation, signed by Governor Abbott last week, aims to provide $10 billion worth of relief to Texans across the state.

The legislation, if approved by voters in November, focuses on increasing homestead exemptions for seniors, homeowners, and businesses. The three pieces of legislation are: Senate Bill 4, Senate Bill 23, and House Bill 9.

SB 4 raises the homestead exemption for school district taxes from $100,00 to $140,000. The state projects this will save the average homeowner $484 annually.

SB 23 increases the homestead exemption on school district taxes for homeowners who have a disability or are 65 years old or older from $10,000 to $60,000. Combined with SB 4, the state projects it will save homeowners more than $950 annually.

HB 9, aimed at small businesses, increases the business personal property tax exemption from $2,500 to $125,000.

What will the Louisiana baws come back with now that they can’t bitch about how high property taxes are? Texas STACKED, Looziana Fuukkked

Ps- more legislation introduced this week to buy down rates even further

Like with all bills, you need the entire transcript to see what other bs is in there. They might be lowering prop taxes while raising or discontinuing something else.

That'll make a dent but not a big one unless you are over 65. $500/year is in the rounding of what I pay in property taxes every year and I don't own my own business.

I have never understood the knock on Texas from Louisiana peeps regarding prop taxes.

I've lived in similarly valued homes in both places and the property taxes were higher in Texas, but not by all THAT much.

The property taxes I paid to Texas were WAY lower than the property tax+income tax I pay to Louisiana.

Not to mention that your property and auto insurance is going to be double in Louisiana vs Texas (if not more).

Didn’t they raise the exemption last year only for the city to increase property tax without a vote by invoking some disater clause that allowed them to do so?

I’m guessing they will do that same here.

I paid 18k a year in property taxes when I lived in Austin. $484 isn't making any difference.

It is a move in the right direction.

Harris County approves over 8% property tax rate increase
quote:

Normally, if a commissioners court in Texas wants to increase a county's budget by more than 3.5%, the court must receive the voter's approval. However, if the governor issues a disaster declaration for a county, the county is then allowed to increase the rate by a maximum of 8% for the following fiscal year without voter approval.

Looks like article was from last Sept. I thought they increased exemption last year.

How many of them raised property taxes last year? I live in the most populous one in Texas and they raised rates 8% last year.

I’m going to guess more Texans had their property taxes increased last year than the entire number of people in Louisiana…since you attached this news to Louisiana baws

Considering my Prop Taxes have gone up 150% over the last 15 years, 10% is nothing.
