Official University Press Release

quote:

Dr. Joseph Savoie is stepping down as president of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette following a transformational 17-year tenure. Savoie, a two-time UL Lafayette graduate and its sixth president, has been named president emeritus by the University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors. His last day as president is Thursday.

Dr. Jaimie Hebert, the University’s provost and vice president for Academic Affairs for the past seven years, will serve as interim president during the search for a permanent successor.

quote:

Significant advancements in academic excellence, campus infrastructure, research capabilities and community engagement marked Savoie’s presidency.

UL Lafayette earned the prestigious Carnegie R1 classification, placing it among the top 5% of the nation’s research institutions. It surpassed $250 million in externally funded research for the first time, launched the largest comprehensive fundraising campaign in its history, implemented a master plan for campus growth, introduced new undergraduate and graduate degree programs, and opened its Health Sciences Campus.

Savoie also oversaw major enhancements to campus, including the expansion and renovation of academic buildings, research centers, student housing, athletic facilities, and the construction of Our Lady of Lourdes Stadium and the Student Union.

As an alum of the university, I am grateful for Dr. Savoie's tenure. It's obvious he cared deeply about the university's future and had the vision to expand from a facilities, research, and enrollment standpoint.

It's also interesting that the two largest public universities in Louisiana will be searching for a new president at the same time.

I went to LSU but my mom worked most of her 30 year career at ULL. He was a good boss, I loved going to the President's House every holiday season for the employee Christmas party.

It’s refreshing to see The University of Louisiana having non woke leadership as opposed to lsjw and crTate

This is what the flagship university looks like

You’re laughing but they have alumni who genuinely believe USL is a better school than LSU. The delusion is mind boggling.

This may be more than a “stepping down”
quote:

In a special meeting today, the UL System’s board of supervisors approved Savoie’s earlier-than-planned transition to his new role as president emeritus and Hebert as interim president.

Savoie’s early exit comes amid multiple years of problematic audits from the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office. UL largely blamed the repeat offenses on staffing shortages and turnover. Like other public universities in the state, UL is staring down a major financial deficit in its athletic department.

Sources close to the UL System have told The Current that Savoie’s early exit is related to the university’s financial instability, though they said a clear picture of its financial condition has yet to be determined.

Then why are they spending millions to renovate Cajun Field if they are “broke.”

Sounds like a spending problem.

Despite my moniker, I also graduated from SLI/USL/ULaLA. T Joe is a member of the same fraternity as I was in. Way back when.

But the press release doesn’t try to say that, does it?

I don’t know all the hell being R1 means, but I did ask Google’s AI what percentage of U.S. universities are classified as R1, and here’s what it said:

quote:

Approximately less than 5% of U.S. universities are classified as R1, which denotes the highest level of research activity. In 2025, 187 out of nearly 4,000 degree-granting institutions in the U.S. hold the R1 designation, according to the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education. This elite group represents the institutions with the highest levels of research activity and is often referred to as "top-tier" research universities.

So I guess laugh at or critique the Carnegie Institute, because that statement in the press release doesn’t appear to be false.

USL, that's right, I said it, was a cool little school and had a very loyal fan base and was just in general a cool little school, when they decided they wanted to sit at the grown up table, with really no reason to believe they should be, their fans and students became a tad obnoxious about it

Dr. Savoie was 1000x's better that Ray Authement. With 2 degrees from USL, I'm thankful Savoie had the vision and leadership to place focus on sports, and make the University better than he found it. It was never about him, he put the students and University first. Live long Dr. Savoie and enjoy your retirement Sir.

Don't worry about this LSU/USL stuff. LSU thinks they're big shite and they are in Louisiana. But compare them to their brethren to the west in the great state of Texas and they ain't shite. Probably Texas Tech is a better rated university.

T Joe is 72. Are university presidents supposed to work until they are 80?
