We just moved to a bigger place, and I'll now be cutting/finish mowing at least 2.5 acres.

I'll be buying a 60" Commercial mower. Besides the initial sticker shock of paying 12-15k, I'm trying to decide when the time is right. I see most dealers already sell for less than "MSRP ", but is there any pricing advantage to waiting until winter or off season? I can make do for the rest of this season, but if it won't be any cheaper I'll just bite the bullet now.

FYI I'm looking at either Ferris or Big Dog Rogue. I want suspension, Kawasaki engine, and at least 30hp.

Any reason for a “commercial” mower for 2.5 acres? With a 60” cut, you might put just over 1 hour a week on that machine.

I’m not certain commercial follow same patterns, but usually best sales are winter season (limited availability though) and in early Spring around the Outdoor Shows timing.

Better Hydros, faster cut speed, more comfortable ride. It will last a lifetime in my service. I need to cut fast. I have a ton of weedeating at this property and in order to get my total time down, gotta be fast. Also, I like nice things and I like to party.

I don't think there is ever that big of a mark down for mowers. I remember when I got my Toro it was during some sale they were having and it was like $500 off. Yay. Pretty sure I could have got $500 knocked off on any regular day.

I've cut 3 acres with a 36" for the past 6 years no issues. Takes a little over 1 hr at most. The 60 will def cut down that time. Not sure if you've got to cut around or squeeze between a bunch of things but want to consider that to.

Man I don't know how you cut 3 acres with 36" in an hour. A while back I was using a 42" ZTR on an acre and it took about an hour. You mowing at 25mph?!

Bought a huge Ferris that was a few years old from an auction nearby. Paid roughly 1/6th of the price of a new one. Thing has been a beast for the last few years. The suspension on it compared to other mowers I've driven is amazing.

if you want a commercial mower you should be looking at scag. You do you on spending that coin for 2.5 acres, but scag is the best

Saying Scag is the best is like saying Glock is the best. Scag good, yes absolutely. The best? That's subjective. Ferris has the best suspension system and ride, that's not subjective. Best also depends on the engine and hydros you choose, which varies even within a given brand. I'm only considering the bad boy Rogue because it has suspension(though not as good), and they can be had for $12k. The Hustler x-ride is also an option because it has suspension as well.

The limit to how fast you can cut is not the rated mph, it's how much of a beating you're willing to take to get it done. The suspension systems make a huge difference.

The guys that roll up next door to cut 2 acres use a Scag and an Exmark. I can’t tell you the models but look to be 54”-60” cuts and both haul butt and cut clean even when the grass is tall and damp.

I myself have a Craftsman Z6900 ZTR 54” cut and it has served me for 6 years. It is purely residential.

I haven't seem them come off of the price due to seasons. They usually try to incentivize sales with 0% financing. However, you may be able to offer a couple of grand lower if you're buying with cash. I have negotiated a lower price in that manner.

Don't listen to all the people questioning why you want a commercial mower. Get what YOU want, its your money
I've bought commercial mowers and never once regretted it. Some things are worth it and I put mowers/tractors in that category. Good luck and enjoy your new mower.

Thanks. My original plan was to buy a compact tractor with a belly mower and some other attachments. Glad I held off as it would be too slow. I'll get a good mower for now, and hunt down a used tractor later.

I mow 5 acres of uneven field grass.

Definitely get the suspension seat. Dial it in for your weight and it's comfortable as heck.

Ferris sounds great. But it's not. The only reason the company exists is because their suspension patents. It's owned by Briggs & Stratton--stay away. With a good commercial unit with suspension seat upgrade, you dont need the Ferris system and they're just not built as well.

The toughest and most overbuilt are Scag and Bad Boy. I own a 51" Bad Boy Renegade and it's a beast.

The best cut quality is Scag Velocity Plus deck and the John Deere 7 Iron deck (onlybfound on their higher end commercialmodels).

“The best cut quality is Scag Velocity Plus deck”

I second that opinion.I had a Exmark before,Scag cut is much better.I have a . 52” Tiger Cat.Takes me a little over 4 hours to cut 5 acres.

For 3 acres, I recommend the Scag Patriot 61”. I have the 52” version with the Kawasaki. I have had it for 6 or seven years now and it has been a very reliable and tough machine. I think I have about 450 hours on it now. ZERO problems.

I ended up going with the Bad Boy Rogue. 61", 35ho Kawasaki. Has the Parker wheel motors. The front suspension isnt really suspension IMO (rubber blocks), but at the price point I cant complain.

There were some sales on '25 models, but I couldn't find what I wanted. Hoping the grass will grow enough to use it a few times before shutting down for the year!

if you are talking semi flat/level turgrass and that is all you plan to cut then no real reason to buy a true "commercial" mower. Go get a scag liberty z48 and call it a day

Wrong perspective.

More time to drink and enjoy the solitude.
