Don’t drink and operate.

This cannot be stated enough.
Imagine being in a bind, being drunk, and on the water

I recommend the first time to launch, you go to Fred's in Port Vincent around 5 PM on a Saturday. There's always guys there who can tell you what you're doing wrong and never help.
The drunks like to hang out around that gazebo area and heckle everyone launching or loading boats.

I do not know of any hands on boating courses for recreational craft. About all you will find is the online course which if you were born after 89 in LA and 80 in MS you will have to take anyway

Best thing to do is find I buddy that has a boat. Get him to teach you how to load/unload and operate it.

Do you have a boat ?
I have been fortunate enough to have been running boats since I was a child.
If you are a willing student I would be willing to teach you all I know. I taught my 15 year old girlfriends how to launch my boat when we would go water skiing when in high school.
Would be glad to help you and pass it on.
If you don’t have a boat, I have several. Also have a boat launch in my backyard.

The best thing to do is to go with a friend and observe. Then assist.

Sorry baw. This is a Louisiana based message board. We all learned how to launch and run a boat before we learned how to drive on a road.

Start with the Wildlife and Fisheries course. Go in person, don't be lazy and do it online. Then find a boat ramp that's not busy during the week and go and practice. Learn how to back up the trailer, the depth you need to back in to launch/load, how to pull up to the dock without wrecking, etc. Don't go out on a busy Saturday morning and block the ramp.
Youtube is also a good resource. Look up videos for launching a boat solo. Lot's of stuff out there.

You are doing the right thing by asking for yourself or someone else. Seems like every time I would go to launch my boat, it was obvious those who had no clue what they were doing and they were an accident just waiting to happen.

Follow the 'Big Dan Show' on Youtube. He films a the new ICW boat launch in OBA and narrates the entire show. It's pure gold.
