Reminds me of the story a few years ago where an ol' baw that had to amputate his own leg at the knee cause he was alone in the mountains and stuck.

Drink the whiskey, bite the belt, this will only hurt a lot.

With a pocket knife! Took him forever

It was actually his arm not his leg and he used a pocket knife

In my lifetime I have seen reliable reports of both happening, in different parts of the country.

During civil war it was bite the bullet.
I've seen badly smashed bullets in museums that had been used by numerous soldiers.

If it's the same one I am remembering, that guy is a badass.
His dozer slid down the side of a mountain and rolled over and pinned him underneath. He didn't tell anybody where he would be working that day.
He cut it off with his pocket knife and crawled to his truck.
He was having to sharpen his knife on a rock to keep at it.
Six months later, he had been fitted with a prosthetic and was jogging.
Never leave the house without your knife.

Who said the 1800's was the "good old days?"

That one was a rock climber. Happened in Arizona, I think.
The guy that amputated his own leg was in North Carolina.

I believe this is the story I'm thinking of.
If you do a google search there are a bunch of stories of people amputating their own shite.

Maybe so, but the vast majority of amputations, even in combat situations, took place using anesthesia
95% of all Civil War surgeries took place using anesthesia

Did Doctors Operate Before Anesthesia?
Take a look at a field medical kit at the Vicksburg military park. That’s your answer.
