I feel like we have to be at a point where emergency vehicles could automatically turn all the lights red as they approach a stoplight.

Some stop lights can detect which direction the sirens of emergency vehicles are approaching from and change the lights as necessary. I do believe AI could work wonders for traffic flow overall though

I moved to my current area just over a year ago. I walk a lot so I see how the traffic signals work. Whoever synchronized these lights is a fricking idiot. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen people waiting at a red light with zero cross traffic then they get the green just as the cross traffic is coming and has to wait.

Been telling my wife AI would be very good at synchronizing the traffic signals. It could know when the next set of cars is coming and calculate if cars or pedestrians waiting to cross could be allowed to go safely before the next wave comes.

I’ve also been saying for years that if people really want to reduce pollution and increase gas mileage, properly synchronized lights would do a lot to help both. But where I live, I swear it seems they want to engineer the exact opposite. (And there is some proof that the TPTB do in fact purposely make things worse for drivers at times. A local politician said he created a “road diet” just to make it harder on drivers so they’d be more likely to ride bikes…)
