I can remember, as a kid, wanting to learn to play the fluegelhorn because of “Feels So Good”.

I was lucky enough to be one of the high school kids that got to share the stage with him to perform for the local school during the day before his concert in our little east Kentucky town was schedule for that evening. I was piddling around on my trumpet and very quietly (I thought) playing along with him on his solo on "Legend of the One Eyed Sailor." He stopped us all and looked around asking who was playing along with his solo. I 'fessed up and started toward the edge of the stage figuring he was gonna kick me out of the place. Instead, he took my trumpet and swapped mouthpieces then handed me his horn and says, "Okay. If you think you can do it, then do it," and he played the backing trumpet part while I got to play his solo.

I had learned the solo for that one from listening to the Tarantella album and playing along, so I wound up playing it with all the squeaks, squeals, and missed notes that he had played it on the live performance from that album. He accused me of being more myna bird than musician afterward.

He was absolutely amazing and he made it a point to spend time interacting personally with each one of us who had been selected to back him that day for the schools' field trip. A truly great person and musician. He is greatly missed.

Not so fun fact: He played at LSU in 79 or 80 and somebody stole a guitar from his band.
