Insatiable thirst, more than just summer heat UPDATE 10/2

10/2 update on page 6
In the last few weeks I've been dealing with increasingly severe thirst. I thought it was just from running in the heat so I didn't think anything of it, or the increased urination that came with it. Well I moved my runs inside, even took a few days off last week, and it hasn't gone away. I googled the symptoms: thirst (especially for ice cold water) that doesn't really resolve, frequent urination, suddenly needing to get up multiple times during the night to pee, and diabetes insipidus came up. By my estimates I'm drinking 5-6 liters of water a day and could probably drink more if I let myself
I'm not sure if that's what it is or if I'm WebMD'ing myself, which is why I'm asking here. Has anyone ever dealt with something like this? I have no other health problems, not overweight, this just seems to be something that popped up this summer.
ETA: doctor hasn't called yet but my blood glucose was 233 while fasting and I had glucose in my urine

My first thought: test your blood sugar to rule out type 1 diabetes
ETA: a better thought is to go to your doctor
Have you noticed any weight loss?

I've never had anything pop up on my annual wellness blood work. Can T1D appear that quickly?

Yes actually, but I attributed it to increasing my mileage. I bumped it up to 40+ miles per week, pushing a stroller, and didn't change my eating habits to keep up

quote:Yes. It’s an autoimmune disease that shows up relatively suddenly.
Can T1D appear that quickly?

To be clear, I’m not a health professional or doctor. I’m a parent to a T1D, so it’s the first thing that comes to my mind when I see those symptoms. It is likely something else and T1D thoughts are just due to my bias.

Got it. I guess I'm making an appointment with my doctor soon. I'm going to be mad as hell if I get diagnosed with diabetes in my 30s

There are probably 100s of things it could be. On the small chance it is T1D, I recommend not delaying seeing your doctor to rule it out. You risk DKA which is a serious and dangerous result of untreated T1D.

Good call. I'm in my 30s and I'd be hauling arse to the doctor for something like this. I know too many folks who ended up with complications or an illness being way worse than it should because they refused to go get checked out.

Yep, better safe than sorry I guess. I keep bouncing between being worried it's something like T1D and telling myself running 6 hours a week in Louisiana summer would make anyone dehydrated
ETA: I checked MyChart just for reference and for the last 7 years my blood glucose has been 82-85 every single time. I've got an appointment scheduled so I guess we'll see.

This happened to my sister about 30 years ago. If your appt isn’t in the next day or 2, find a friend or relative with diabetes and have them come over and test your blood.
My cousin came over and tested my sister and she went straight to the hospital and stayed for a few days.

I managed to get an appointment this week. Out of curiosity, what'd your sister end up having? Type 1 diabetes?
Oddly enough, my wife made me drink an electrolyte mix last night thinking it could still be some kind of dehydration/electrolyte imbalance and this morning I've had less than a liter of water, urge to pee is back to normal. I'm still going to get everything checked out

I think this has been covered before, but filtered water with the minerals stripped out (bottles, fridges, Brita filters, etc.) can have you slamming water, but your body still desperate for some calcium, sodium, etc. I found even dropping a pinch of sea salt in my workout water bottle helped out.
If you're on anything for ADD/ADHD, it will also greatly increase your thirst.

I know you’ve been running a lot lately. Everyone is different, but I have a post run drink consisting of BCAA/EAA, creatine, collagen, and electrolytes after every run regardless of distance. Especially right now during the summer. You may just be dehydrated.

I will add to this thread - I think it was last weekend I drank like 120oz of water, 50oz of it was from a "normal" electrolyte drink (Powerade) and I was STILL thirsty.
I knew something was off, so I picked up a packet of LMNT and drank it with 10oz of water.
3 Hours later I felt normal again - my electrolytes had gotten WAY off kilter and I needed a 1000mg shot of sodium to fix it is all... sometimes we drink our electrolytes but we are still not replenishing what we sweat out as runners, always keep that in mind.

Is liquid IV worth a crap? I've taken it and I think it helps but I'm not sure if it's not part mental.

That's what my wife had me drink and my thirst/urination was totally normal today. I'm pretty sure they're all just mega doses of sodium and potassium anyway

Liquid IV - 520mg sodium, 370mg potassium, no magnesium (50 calories)
LMNT - 1000mg sodium, 200mg potassium, 60mg magnesium (0 calories)
ETA: Sodium is what allows your body to absorb water - so if you are low on sodium you will have a thirst that cannot be quenched. Last summer a woman died in Georgia when her body got so low on sodium that she began drinking water so much that she deluted her blood and got "water poisoning". I started drinking LMNT after that

Sounds like it could be hyponatremia. Like other said if your sodium levels are too far off your body won't effectively absorb the water. I do 12 and 24 hour mountain bike races and electrolytes you take in are just as important as the water. A couple of glasses between meals isn't a big deal but constantly chugging 1-2l between meals sweating out a lot and having low sodium meals can quickly lower your electrolyte levels.
When planning a 12-24 race in the summer I shoot for 1000mg of electrolytes per liter of water consumed in my nutrition planning. No need to buy really expensive electrolyte drinks. Electrolytes are cheap. Morton's lite salt is 50% sodium chloride and 50% potassium chloride. Mix and equal part of that with an equal part of table salt for a 3:1 sodium to potassium ratio. By weight that mixture is 40% electrolytes and 60% chloride. So to get 1000mg you need 2500mg of the mixture. Which is a little less than half a teaspoon. On those 12+ hour rides I find the acidic sweet taste and artificial sweeteners used in the sports drinks off putting after constant drinking all day to maintain my hydration. 1/2 teaspoon per liter will have a slightly brackish taste. For magnesium a small handful of nuts spread out through the ride is more than enough to supply me with enough magnesium for the day. But in normal 3-4 hour rides I don't worry about Magnesium supplementation. First sign for me of low Magnesium is a twitchy eye which is pretty common.
