Not only did the former Houston Astros ace get ejected from a game in which he wasn’t even pitching, but home plate umpire Chad Whitson taunted him while doing it.
quote:

With the Giants, who enter Monday 2½ games out of the National League’s final wild card spot, trailing the Toronto Blue Jays 7-4 in the sixth inning Sunday, Whitson appeared to miss two pitches with Brett Wisely at the plate, calling a pair of outside pitches strikes against the Giants hitter.
quote:

Whitson appeared to have enough of the chirping coming from the Giants dugout and tossed Verlander. That, in itself, is not all that unusual, but TV mics caught Whitson telling Verlander, “How about you worry about getting out of the third inning, huh?”
After the game, Giants manager Bob Melvin defended his pitcher, telling the San Francisco Chronicle, “JV is very into the game when he’s pitching and when he’s not. Players appreciate that.”
Taunting a future Hall of Famer seems like an odd choice, but Verlander has struggled mightily, including failing to get out of the third inning in a Friday loss in which Whitson was at second base. Verlander gave up four earned runs in 2? innings in that game to increase his ERA to 4.99 to go along with an 0-8 record. Video in link

Much easier to get out of an inning if the umpire actually calls balls and strikes correctly.

I’d publicly fire and shame the frick out of this umpire if I had the power.

He’s allowed to call games.
He’s allowed to throw folks out.
He’s allowed to talk shite.

But frick if he’s allowed to do all 3 at the same time.

I think we should just get rid of replay as it’s become too much and ruining sports….. but I cannot wait for robots to replace these pompous pricks. Couldn’t hack it in jv baseball so become an a-hole umpire. frick em

I’m generally team umpire and not in favor of robo umps. I appreciate the imperfections of sport.

But damn…you have to be professional here. You can’t taunt a guy like that.

Again
Another panty wasted baseball umpire who can’t handle a little chirping

It’s from the dugout and affects absolutely nothing. Man up and do your job.

I can only imagine the woe is me tantrum umps would throw if the situation were reversed and a player of Verlander’s stature belittled an ump like that

Only if he's willing to receive the same energy level. If he won't let players talk shite back to him, he needs to find a profession better suited for his thin-skin

When you're 0-8, you shouldn't be saying shite.

Imagine shite talking a first-ballot HOFer when your whole profession is on the verge of being eliminated by machines.

I mean, isn’t that what Verlander was doing? Players are always telling umpires that they’re doing a bad job and belittling their performance.

I understand umpires getting frustrated with players from time to time, but you have to bite your tongue unless the player unleashes first. And even then, your comments should probably not include what this ump said.

Umpire salary is 150k-450k a year and you are only working a couple months. I’d listen to all the chirping and wouldn’t say shite back

I mean, to be fair, you have a point.

It would be hilarious if guys actually complimented and praised the umps when they got a call right. Not sure if the umps would know how to act lol

What if you looked at it this way:

‘Another panty wasted (whatever the frick that means) baseball player who can’t handle a little chirping’

Not even saying that I agree with what I’m saying , but isn’t verlander considered just as ‘professional’, if not more so than the umpire? Why can’t he handle a little chirping?

I thought it was a funny line from the umpire

Verlander is making $15 million this year. Shouldn’t he just sit in the dugout and shut up?

Exactly.

The players, coaches, managers do it constantly, but when the umpire gives a little bit back everyone gets worked up.

Hell, umpires and managers trade "frick yous" regularly.

First. Umpires are supposed to be level headed and objective.

Second. Players and managers don’t have the power to throw the ump out of the game.
