Have any of you baws fell victim to the robot deer decoy?

almost got my dad in Alabama one day. lived in Alabama and was on our way to our spot in Florida. right near the state line, there was a field with a tree line about 100-150 yds from the road. there stood a deer or so we thought.
we're out in the middle of no where, but it's still a public road. my dad sees it and pulls over. props up his 7 mag and just looks at it for about 2-3 minutes. all the while i'm like, "shoot it! shoot it!" (i'm like 14 at the time
)
but he just keeps watching it through his rifle scope. about 5 minutes goes by, and he puts his rifle down. "i think it's a decoy. it hasn't moved."
so, we pull back onto the road and not even 1/4 mile up the street from the decoy, right across the street we see a black Chevy hid just out of sight from where we were. 2 rifles in the truck and a 4 wheeler in the bed. one trigger pull and we would've lost it all.

You can still get in trouble for that. At the least they would call it harassment of wildlife.

OP says that they stopped, sighted in on the fake deer, discovered it was fake, and didn’t shoot. I know I’ve read stories that is enough for the green jeans to pop you right there.
I know for fact if you were to see that deer, turn the truck around and simply shine the lights at it, they will bust you for wildlife harassment. They there to get anyone they can with that. For anything. Don’t matter to them.

How do you harass an inanimate object? Does the fake identify as a real deer?

Buddy of mine and his dad did in New Mexico. They did the work to get legal though. Got off the road, kept gun unloaded until ready. Hiked up to a bluff and took the shot. Warden came around laughing and commended them for doing the right thing.

Pretty close to it.
My uncle had a bunch of trouble with road hunters on his land in Mississippi. He went and gave the wardens permission to set up a decoy and forgot to tell us. A month later my cousin and I were going out to hunt and saw a big arse buck bedded up in the corner of my uncle's bean field. My cousin put his civic in the ditch and we bailed out with our guns and started creeping down a finger of woods to get a shot. My cousin was about to shoot and brought his gun down and said "that dont look right". A bunch of warden vehicles pulled up right after. We told them we were going out there to hunt and they called my uncle to confirm. They offered to leave and we said nah we will go elsewhere. They ended up catching a road hunter that night.
In hindsight we both agreed it should have been obvious from the start it was a decoy. When we weren't expecting it we got fooled easy.

Anyone remember the time the LSP trooper shot at a decoy deer out of his patrol car while on duty.Long time ago when they carried .357 magnums.
Happened on Hwy 167 close to Williana.
If I remember correctly he shot 6 times,deer didn’t move so he tried to take off but green jeans got him.He got a ticket and suspension but wasn’t fired.

We had property in SW Miss for 30 yrs. Grandpa started a hunting club with locals around 1980. Locals never liked we owned land. They would enforce club rules strictly but being locals felt they owned the game and all land around the lease. One of the patriarchs headed to the club one am around 1992-95 ish couldnt resist and shot a fake deer at 4am on the road. He eventually got all his stuff back but had to sit out the deer season for 2-3 years iirc. It was swept under the rug as if nothing happened. He was an officer in the club so from then on any time they gave us crap for shooting legal but not optimal deer I just shook my head. Made me realize all the nice deer they killed were probably illegal

Heard a story about a friend of a friend who was driving his camp truck when he was underage, 15 or so. Saw the deer in a field and thought about it… they made the head and ear move with a remote control. He tore off the road and through the field to ram the deer with the truck. I think the wardens got such a kick out of it that he didn’t get in too much trouble.

Back in College I worked at the local parish prison. We had a guy come in every Friday and check out on Sunday. I talked to him one day because he seemed out of place. Said his wife sent him to the store Christmas Eve tge year before to get eggs. It was about 5:30 in the evening. He saw a big buck in the side of the road. Said he couldn’t stand it and shot. It was a fake deer and he knew it instantly. As soon as he fired he said 10 federal game wardens swooped in to arrest him. They were actually looking for some poachers but he just was in wrong place wrong time. They took his truck gun and he had to pay a couple thousand in fines and was working off 200 hrs community service.

I always thought this was a bullshite charge nothing wrong with looking at a deer

If you are an honest, law abiding individual, there is no cause to complain. If you have criminal tendencies then you deserve everything that you get in punishment.
