How many players away from competing are we?

With the outlook of a depleted roster and a rebuilding year…
What will it take for us to win a playoff game next year or in 2027?
Obviously we need a QB to show up or develop, but what would constitute a successful step forward this year?

Things can change quickly with the right coach/QB combo. See Washington; from 4-13 in 2023 to 12-5 in 2024 and in the NFC Championship game. Same with Saints from 2005 to 2006.

A good healthy cohesive oline.
By the end of the year being better at running and stopping the run.
Someone stepping up to rush the QB.

I agree with this.
Progress from the QB and more importantly the scheme.
Cohesion from the OlIne
A number 1 WR
A pass rusher
Improvement from the younger LBs
An up and coming Safety

We have a rookie QB. If he hits like Nix, May, or Daniels, it opens you up to turn things around quickly. If he is Zac Wilson or Mac Jones, we are going to suck for a while.

If Shough is good we are really only a few away from being in the playoffs consistently
Our division is ripe for the taking

QB: need to see if Shough is the guy. If not, QB.
WR: we need a #1 WR
TE: we need a better TE.
Edge: we need a legit pass rusher at DE and/or OLB. Biggest need IMO.
S: Mathieu is getting old.
We need these positions to be competitive.
Our O Line has talent, we just need them to develop and stay healthy. Ruiz can be upgraded and Penning at guard is TBD, but it’s good enough to be competitive.
Kamara is getting old, but he’s still good, and Miller, Neal, CEH and Akers have talent enough to emerge as a good compliment and provide depth.
Bresee is a good pass rusher. He needs to become a better run defender. Hopefully Godchaux helps with that.
I’m hopeful Kool-aid, Taylor and Yiadom are enough to hold down the CB position. We probably need a legit CB to compete for championships, but I think this group is good enough to be NFL level competitive. I hope at least.

Agree with most of this.
If Shough hits we are probably one year away.
OL/TE/RB is good enough (we need to draft a RB next yr tho)
WR we need an early rd pick or Free agent w legit talent
We need a pass rusher and another run stuffer.
We need Stutsman to hit to replace Demario along w Werner.
We need another corner and safety to replace Tyran and add talent at CB/nickel.

45 ish tbh. Not many players on our roster that are capable of winning at a high level.

Yep
Assuming Moore is competent, it really is that simple

assuming QB is average-above average?
We're about 4:
DE - need a game changing level guy; prime Cam Jordan can change this entire thing.
DT - Bresee is a great pass rushing DT, but gotta get him that partner who can free him up.
WR - need a true possession WR, we have a low end WR1 (if healthy) and a really good deep threat #2. But a true guy who can get the ball on the 3rd downs you absolutely need it
LB - I'm not down on Pete, but he's like scott shanle - just good enough, but we need a scott fujita type of dude.

Yeah, the only position that really matters to turn it around is getting the right QB, but that couild take 50 years.

Assuming Shough is good
Competing for the division? 5-7
Competing for the conference? 12-15
Competing for SB? 20-25
The whole defense and offensive skill position players essentially will need to be rebuilt in the next year or two. Depth across the whole roster will need to be replenished as well.
Good news is, the cap space will keep growing if we don’t dole out any stupid contacts. I’m not sure anyone on the roster, who isn’t under contract long term, needs to be retained unless at a “discount”

Mahomes looked shaky in the Super Bowl because his tackles couldn't block.
The Eagles weren't doing anything super innovative.
I agree for the most part that yeah you need the right QB but even the elite ones fall if their blocking collapses.
Let's hope the Saints have at least solved the tackle spot with Banks and Fuaga because if they have, huge step in the right direction.
