R&V works Cajun fryer 4 gallon

Is it worth the money? Growing up, all of my dad’s friends had one. But I don’t think they were so costly back then. They seem to hold up and last. I have a friend that recently bought the bayou classic 4 gallon and said the temp moves way faster than the r&v works, making it harder to hold temp.
I saw that academy offers one now but I haven’t heard anything about it.
To be clear, I’m talking about a 4 gallon propane fish fryer.

They are pricey now, I have a 6 gal. Depends on how much you fry and for how many people. You can shell out a lot of food in a short period. I like the convenience of the steady temps, it's solid as far as that. I keep my oil for about a year, filter it after every cook. Oil is expensive too. Walmart usually sells the Lou-Ana Peanut oil in 3 gal containers after thanksgiving for $20. My only complaint was the cheap regulator on them, but you can replace them with a good one from a hardware store or find something online that is more solid than the one provided. They hold up really well as long as you dont let them sit out in the weather and lightly coat with oil after using/washing it

Both have the design that keeps the crumbs down below the heat source which allows you to get a lot of cooks on the same batch of oil. The R&V is made out of heavier carbon steel and the Bayou Classics a thinner SS. Both work great. Heat retention is going to a little better with the R&V and they are probably a little more durable. Bayou Classic is a little less expensive, or it used to be anyway.
As to if whether either are worth it it depends on how much you're frying I guess. I have a 4gal R&V both at home and one at the camp. It's a little over kill to fire up to cook a batch of fries on a Tuesday night, but it is a Cadillac when needing to fry anything of volume. I will always have one in the cooking arsenal. Both companies also make a 2.5 gallon single basket of you need a smaller one.

If you occasionally fry for a crowd, absolutely. I have the stainless double-basket on the rolling stand and love it for frying chicken. That one goes for around $600 +/- now I think. I paid around $450 right before the price started taking off.

I’ll give you another option to consider. If you shop around there are always used commercial fryers for sale online, FB, etc. you can get them cheap. I recently bought one for a couple hundred dollars. Cleaned it up and it looks brand new. All stainless and has a thermostat so you just set the temperature and no worries about having to manually regulate the temp. They can be converted from Natural gas to propane by changing the jets out. They sell the kits on Amazon.
Just an idea to consider. They are very simple to work on if you find one that isn’t working.

I have one and bought it from someone on here for a good discount. Its great but for me I dont think Id purchase at full price. They have knock off versions (check webstaurant store . Com) that look like a similar design and function as well as lightly used ones that pop up on FB marketplace.

I have two 6 gallon ones. I have been very pleased with the quality. I can do a fish fry for about 100 people in one hour with fries and hush puppies.
Have thought about getting the 2.5 gallon one for home use, but I have a decent 5 liter electric fryer that gets the job done. Maybe one day.
Keeping the quality of the oil better for longer because of the cool zone design is a really great feature.

A friend had the bayou classic 4gal and told me to get the 2.5gal model if I got one. Picked up a used one like new for cheap (2.5gal) and love it. You do have to watch the temp but it’s not terrible. Plan to use it tonight.

I have the R&V single basket version and love it. Heats up quick. I'd like to have the double basket, but this one was a gift so I can't complain.
I change the oil out every couple of years or so, probably ought to filter it once in a while.

OP I personally love mine. Hets fast and holds temp so its easy to fry up a bunch. My one gripe is the finish, I would plan to touch it up over the years. That was why I wanted a SS so that would not be needed. The bayou classic is SS but not as well made. I also been thinking about just using my high performance cookers for frying. I have a 40qt turkey fryer with a basket. I dont know if it would heat and hold temp as well as the cajun RV.
It does not have a lid for oil storage but the lid seals pretty good to keep pest and dust out. I have left the oil in it for long times outside...no one got the fois yet that I know of
Tip they sell fryer cleaning puck on Amazon that work well.

No, just a metal lid. Never seen any bug or anything else in there.

i wonder how long it would be to recoup if you were to buy a CNC to cut the panels and learn to tig these together..... im guessing you could make some money...

A CNC router has a spindle on a gantry and CNC machines in 3 axes on a large format vacuum table, commonly used for aluminum, plastic, wood, etc.

Had no idea that these existed until your post. I have a 6 gallon at home and a 4 gallon at the camp and for the most part i just rinse the debris out of the bottom when changing the oil. Every few years I pressure wash which I thought was as clean as I could ever get them.
These pucks are incredible, not quite back to new but pretty damn close. I'll be using every year. Thanks for posting this.
And I agree on the finish--that's the only negative thing I have to say about the cajun rv......well except maybe it could be a little easier to rinse the crud out when it's really caked up.
