I made the thread just to see how many do or don't know who he is, and maybe read a few opinions.

He’s a famous preacher from California.

Well, no. Or as Tim Keller would say, “I guess it depends on what your fundamentals are.”

Eta:
And whatever one’s opinion of J Mac, you have admire a man who can take decades to preach expositorily through the entire Bible. In English.

His friendship and humorous “rivalry” with RC Sproul was a blessing. They disagreed on some minor points like eschatology (RC once called J Mac’s “goofy”) and paedobaptism. Some have read (I think mostly unfairly) some pejorative “Lordship salvation” into J Mac’s teaching.
But on a lighter note:
I can’t remember the exact wording but RC was taking questions after a lecture and the MC said, “Remember, there’s no such thing as a stupid question,” just as J Mac took the mic to ask a question. RC goes, “But I have a feeling I’m about to hear one,” without missing a beat.

He was an extremely influential minister with a large congregation and a big impact on American Protestantism beyond that congregation. His church was non-denominational (in a very, very different sense from how non-denominational megachurches that are common today), but he considered himself Baptist while also affirming the basic doctrines of Calvinism.

His preaching focused on explaining the Bible verse by verse. He was very supportive of traditional gender roles, and at times he taught that women shouldn't work outside the home or hold any secular or religious positions of authority. He had his controversies, which you can read about in the article linked above.

Whatever you thought of him, he was a very influential voice in American Protestantism.

Unless I'm misunderstanding what "Lordship salvation" is (not a term we use in the church I attend), I don't see how it's controversial.

Is anybody out there really preaching that you can be saved if you're baptized but then don't try to live as a servant of Christ?

Christianity Today is a joke. Read with caution anything they print.

Yeah I dunno. I see so much nonsense online. Have to filter it.

Saw someone accuse him of nestorianism too. People have too much time on their hands.

I'm a JMac fan. MacArthur, Piper, Chandler, and Sproul shaped my faith in my teens and 20s.

Uh, no. Reformed soteriology is like 20% of reformed theology.

MacArthur was a borderline heretic. He preached views that leaned heavily into Nestorianism.
