This has to be the first time in the history of the game a single player is not hitting .300 at the all star break.

Sounds to me like the pitching is getting a bit tougher to hit.

He's not a qualified player since he doesn't have enough ABs

He’s played in 73 games out of 93 games. He can’t be far off of being qualified

and the only ones who are even close to .300 have only played in about 65% of games and aren't qualified.

it's wild just how bad the hitters are these days. it's not because pitching is just "that good".

MLB hitting is at an all-time low .... at this point, a .250 batting average will be considered "All-Star".

All the cyber nerds will come in here and tell you that BA is no longer relevant. Which is BS but they’re not smart enough to understand so we’ve just got to ignore them.

For winning, I think it’s pretty clear it’s not very important, if at all.

But at the end of the day, it’s an entertainment product, and the way hitters are approaching the game makes it often unwatchable.

There isn’t any data to suggest lower averages = more runs. I don’t know how so many people have bought into that nonsense.

Typical analytics. As with anything, those current always believe they know better than their predecessors. The game hasn't improved due to analytics and has become less entertaining. Maybe the old guys from the past knew exactly what they were doing. New does not equal better. BA was an important stat for 150+ years yet now it means nothing.

Analytics= Mike Trout. Whole bunch of pizzazz with very little substance. Hollow numbers that won exactly nothing.

Goodness, this is just flat out wrong. Average comes at a cost to power, and power has 100% proven to be a more efficient way of scoring.

mlb has bottomed out. it's not good

the cardinals should be 10-20 under, but league is so mediocre, they are above, and finished over, with a shite team last year

giving false gold to fans of some teams

Batting average has been de-empasized and de-valued by the sabermatricians and players in deference to launch angle and slug approach.

1-5 with 2-home run is the same as 3-4 with 3 singles with one RBI and one run scored for the stat heads.

There’s also no data that says you have to give up power to boost average. In the last 7 years 2019 had the highest runs per game average and also had the highest batting average for the MLB.

Since they played 96 games he needs 297.6 players appearances to qualify. Right now he has 296.

If he ended the season with similar PA per game, he’d likely still be the batting champion even after accounting for the lack of PA.
