Quick trip to NYC: JFK to Manhattan logistics and quick restaurant/street food recs?

Going to NYC for 2 nights, mid week, to see a taping of a show. We're flying in late on tuesday (land at midnight) and fly out thursday around 4 (JFK for both).
No hotel yet, i assume we'll stay somewhere in the midtown area, i guess that's near times square.
Best way to get to and from JFK?
Best walkable places to grab a quick bite?
any other pro tips?
yes, i know it's quick an not optimal, it's all our schedules would allow...

What airline? How much luggage are you bringing?

To get to Manhattan, two very easy methods. Take the air train from whatever terminal you're at to Jamaica and then either the E or the LIRR to Penn Station/Grand Central. Because you're coming in at midnight, I would lean taxi (should not be much traffic that late at night). Only reason I asked what terminal is because for ride shares out of some terminals, you have to take a shuttle to a pickup location currently LINK. Not sure you want to add those extra steps for an Uber especially that late at night. For your return, I'd do the E/LIRR to Jamaica to the air train.

Delta. Only carry on. Packing light.

Use Dial7 or Carmel to get into the city. Be sure to have cash for a tip

Uber or taxi into the city then you can train it to JFK. In midtown, NY Pizza Suprema for slices, I just finished off 2 of their slices and it stacks up with the best in NYC. Roberta's if you want a whole pie. Joes Broadway is good pizza too but can have long lines. The Jeffrey in midtown East is a great pub with excellent food.

Landing at mightding? Taxi is the easy choice.
Leaving at 4P? Subway (E?) to JFK Air Train, or LIRR from Penn Station to Jamaica and Air Train transfer is there.
At one time you had to buy Air Train tikcets in a huge messy line at Jamaica. That massively sucked donkey balls. See if you can buy ahead or through an app.

Cab from JFK at midnight is easiest, flat rate around $70. For the return, book Uber or car service by 1 PM.
Quick food near Midtown: Joe’s Pizza (fast, classic slice) Los Tacos No. 1 (inside Times Square food court) Ess-a-Bagel (good breakfast) Skip Times Square food otherwise.

Thanks for the pointers!
Yes, honesty we’re looking at avoiding any tourist focused stuff.

Try to stay somewhere near the financial district if possible, tends to be much quieter at night.

Your location is perfect. We stayed at the Warwick (one block over) on one trip, and it was a great location. You're still in the mix of things, but you're not in the insanity of the Times Square area.

If it wasn’t midnight I would go airtrain then subway. Honestly JFK uber is a pain in the arse so cab may work.
My daughter lives on 43rd so if you get more details on destination I can tell you more restaurants.
On the way out I would take the subway.

i guess what i meant was we were avoiding going to any ultra touristy things and/or waiting in line for stuff. yes, midtown was touristy in general but not times square, statue of liberty levels. we just wanted to walk around, eat a bunch, see some stuff, shop, etc. And we accomplished all we wanted to...
Thanks to everyone who helped! We had a blast! used Dial7 and had a car waiting for us at midnight to bring us to Manhattan. Nicest Indian guy, turns out he grew up near where bobby Jindal's parents were from (he mentioned this when we told him we were from Louisiana).
hung out, walked 40k steps, ate, shopped, sight saw central park, subway to the WTC memorial and around the southern parts of Manhattan, then back to the park then the E train to Jamaica to the air train to our terminal and back home. could not have been more smooth thanks to yall help!
