Looks like there may be more problems for Boeing regarding that Air India crash

A preliminary report into the Air India crash that killed 260 people last month showed three seconds after taking off, the plane's engines fuel cutoff switches almost simultaneously flipped from run to cutoff, starving the engines of fuel.
The Boeing Dreamliner immediately began to lose thrust and sink down, according to the report released on Saturday by Indian aviation accident investigators.
quote:
One pilot can be heard on the cockpit voice recorder asking the other why he cut off the fuel. "The other pilot responded that he did not do so," the report said.
It did not identify which remarks were made by the flight's captain and which by the first officer, nor which pilot transmitted "Mayday, Mayday, Mayday" just before the crash.
The preliminary report also does not say how the switch could have flipped to the cutoff position on the June 12 London-bound flight from the Indian city of Ahmedabad.
U.S. aviation safety expert John Cox said a pilot would not be able to accidentally move the fuel switches that feed the engines. "You can't bump them and they move," he said.
Flipping to cutoff almost immediately cuts the engines. It is most often used to turn engines off once a plane has arrived at its airport gate and in certain emergency situations, such as an engine fire. The report does not indicate there was any emergency requiring an engine cutoff.

Why would that be Boeing's fault?

If they just cut off without human intervention.

Is that possible?

No idea but both pilots indicated they didn't do it on the voice recorder.

Well, duh.
He's not gonna tell the other pulot he did it.
Boeing sucks, but Im betting Air India is the culprit.

This plane has been around for 25 years with no fuel system issues
Far more likely an Air India issue

Someone posted in the big Air India Crash Thread that Air India ignored Boeing instructions in 2017 to install locking mechanisms on the fuel switches
No link to what they claimed, but that is posted in there.

Because they were fricking around during the pre flight check and don’t remember.

Seems like it was either purposely done by one of the pilots regardless of not admitting to it, or it was Air India never acting on an advisory from the FAA back in 2018 that some of them switches may have come with locking mechanism not engaged which helped created an accidental fuel cut off situation by one of the pilots. It was not reported as a mandatory pull aside all planes and check and engage as needed, but after 7 years you would think someone would have noticed. But it is Air India…

Also sounds like you can't inadvertently switch it off, like leaning on the switch. It's more intricate that.
Also was wondering why that would even be possible (cut off fuel on both engines) while airborne. According to this video I watch there's an SOP that requires it (loss of both engines), but that same procedures requires you to turn it right back on.

No known issues with the Dreamliner. I sort of doubt this is not Air India’s pilot error.

The chances of it happening at take off when pilots are very active compared to the other 95% of the time? Seems glaringly like pilot error whether they meant to or not

Just amazing how this never seems to happen to an Airbus in the last 2 decades

Airbus planes are just as susceptible to potentially suicidal pilots. See Germanwings.
