Someone snuck in a provision in the recent bill (now law) that eliminates the DOT’s authority to collect fines for failing to meet fuel economy standards. It make take a few years, but some engines should hopefully become cheaper and more reliable.

LINK

quote:

Since 1975, the Department of Transportation has regulated automakers' corporate average fuel economy — the CAFE standards we all know and love. The regulations have, functionally, been simple penalties that companies must pay when they fail to meet fleet-wide average fuel economy standards that have slowly ticked up over the past 50 years. But, after five decades of regulation, the latest federal budget bill eliminates the DOT's ability to collect those punitive fines. The laws are still on the books, but there's no longer any penalty for failing to meet them. In essence, it's open season on fuel economy in the good ol' U.S. of A.

quote:

Automotive News spoke with industry analysts about the rule change, who acknowledged that automakers may well just go back to producing less and less fuel-efficient cars. We've already seen Stellantis get a head start, giving the Ram 1500 its Hemi back (and a "symbol of protest" badge, because these trucks are largely bought out of spite), but it's not the only company likely to benefit here. Even Toyota, known for its rigorous adherence to fuel-efficiency standards, has a V8 prototype in the works.

America is healing.

Next up, time to abolish the DEF requirement for diesel trucks.

We’ll see. Figured you’d want the EGR and DPF requirement to go first.

If the DOT's authority to collect fines related to CAFE standards was removed via budget reconciliation, couldn't it just be reinstated via the same mechanism the next time Democrats have Congress and the presidency? Not sure if any major automaker is going to be willing to stake a ton of money in hopes of that event not happening.

I mean, isn't that true for all kinds of stuff?

For the person crying about "deception", how do we think all these policies were previously implemented? Is anyone really pretending this sort of regulatory bullshite are things a majority of the citizenry was clamoring for previously?

Nobody wanted you retards to allow the bureaucratic state to push regulations on the population.

And let’s not act like you’re now against omnibus bills.

Now we can get true compact pickups back. Chevy S10, Jeep Comanche, actual Ranger, Nissan hardbody, etc. Give me any of those with a straight 6 and a 5 speed. Also with hand crank windows, and buttons and knobs on the dash, not a massive iPad screen.

Yeah, but it's not like Congress passed a bill removing the regulations. They still exist, but the Senate just neutered the enforcement mechanism by using a process that only requires 50+1 votes (instead of a filibuster-proof 60). There's no way in hell automakers are putting a bunch of capital at stake based on that. Now if the Senate passed a bill removing the CAFE regulations entirely...absolutely.

you mean like when an entire administration, his party, and every democrat in media says the President is of sound cognitive abilities? Or when the VP says the boarder is secure? Or when no one knows who is actually "running" the country? OR when the Speaker of the House says we have to pass the bill to see whats in it?

EGR could go away today. DEF consumption would increase, a trade id gladly take, but the market execs for engine companies seem to be brainless.

Id be fine with keeping the DPF and SCR systems with the caveat that the limp mode derates go away and the systems be made user-servicable.

Why don't they just go back to building their old reliable v-8?

Ah, yes. One of the most-famously discussed/dissected/negotiated pieces of legislation in the past quarter century. Lots of sneaky shite in there.

FYI Jalopnik is an extreme-left publication whose staff is a bunch of apartment dwellers in NYC and Los Angeles. Their decent writers left over a decade ago and it is now just publishing a mix of ai-generated articles and rage bait to get ad revenue from clicks.

The author “Amber” DaSilva is a literal tranny whose real name is Steve.

Just in case you were wondering about the bias in the article.

This is literally where the quote “You have to pass it to find out what’s in it” came from.

Was once a great read but I stopped after their article on the Camaro SS.

If your lawmakers would have just read the bill there could have been no deception. But alas you gotta pass the bill to know what is in the bill.

You really did not think this post through before posting did you.

Right. In a speech to the National Association of Counties. Not the congressfolk opposed to the bill, who had plenty of time to review/debate/etc.
