Listen to my words. I’ve been an HVAC mechanic for a long time.

If tweet fails to load, click here. 75% of the calls I get are on equipment 5yrs old or less.
Engineers have stuffed so much superfluous electronics and sensitive parts into these units, supposedly for efficiency, that constantly fail.
We’re now mandated to use a new refrigerant, meaning the old equipment is not available any more, and the cost per pound for the new stuff is more than double.
If you have one of these old girls at your house, you better hope and pray your compressor stays ok because this is a tank and will run forever. There are 4 parts in this unit. A fan, a capacitor, a contactor, and a compressor. I can get any of these parts (minus the compressor) off any shelf in town. In fact, I carry replacement parts for this unit on my truck.

This is partly the reason I fix my older stuff myself. Yall can have the fancy chinese bells and whistles.

You get what you pay for.

Guy at work just had his compressor changed.
The brand new one was broken out of the box.
Insane.
My last unit was 27 years old.
I doubt I get anywhere near that with this one

I had an old Rheem unit like the one pictured. I kept it going as long as I could. I replaced capacitors, contactors, and motors myself. Finally the coil developed a hole and I bought a new system. That was 10 years ago and I’m going to do the same thing with this one.

I have a 5-ton 2012 American Standard. It's the best air conditioner I've ever owned. I'd do whatever is necessary to keep it rolling.

Not really. That’s the point.

Agree!! Trump needs to make A/C great again. F#$k all the bells and whistles. I want it to work reliably and cool my house. Let's get back to old school refrigerants.
And why have I had to replace my capacitor like 3 times in the last 2-3 years. And it seems like everyone else I know has had issues. Shitty capacitors?

My parents got an old GE (Trane bought them out years ago) that is original to the house built in 1982. I was just a kid back then. That thing is still running today.

A lot of capacitors are made in China.

My first house was built in 1981 and had the original HVAC unit when I got it. I sold the house in 2023 and the buyers said they needed an allowance for a new unit. I drove by the other day and the original was still kicking.

Write this down:
HVAC-as-a-service is the model of the future. Nobody cares about the unit; they pay for cold air to come out of their vents.
Just like internet; you pay for connectivity, not a modem.
