President Donald Trump announced Wednesday he planned to hit Brazil with a 50% tariff, in part because of the treatment of its former president Jair Bolsonaro, his political ally. In a letter on his Truth Social social media network, Trump told current President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva that "the way Brazil has treated former President Bolsonaro ... is an international disgrace."

quote:

Trump has fiercely defended Bolsonaro, who is sometimes referred to as the “Trump of the tropics,” as Bolsonaro faces charges that he plotted to overturn his 2022 election loss. "This trial should not be taking place," Trump added. Trump accused the Brazilian government of "insidious attacks on Free Elections, and the fundamental Free Speech Rights of Americans" including censorship of "U.S. Social Media platforms."

That is a domestic political issue that we should stay out of altogether.

Furthermore, Trump is starting to brazenly flaunt that his tariffs have nothing to do with his supposed national emergency that affords him such powers normally reserved for congress.

He’s completely out of control, this and the dumb copper tariffs are true lunacy. I voted for him, but completely disgusted with the majority of his actions.

so you're telling me this guy represents the "political right" in the same vein as Trump, Milei, Bukele etc. and you're also telling me that he's getting accurately portrayed in an NBC news report with absolutely no bias whatsoever??

This is pure idiocy by Trump.

Congress needs to reign in this embarrassing nonsense.

This isn't really what I voted for, but i'm not in charge of foreign policy, so I'm gonna have to just acquiesce to the President on this one.

You can’t overturn a fraudulent election.

You meant to say that “the progressives won that election so it is a domestic political issue that we should stay out of.”

You apparently have zero critical thinking skills, geopolitical knowledge, and must be prone to wanting communist rule over your life.

Just like in Venezuala, Colombia and even in 2020, the same DEEP STATE overlords stole those elections the last time around. And in South America, everyone knows it.

And they cannot stand those presidents, and if Brazil and Colombia don’t turn it around, eventually they will both be like Venezuala.

And ask me how I know this, because I go to South American sometimes 1x per month when I have time. And all of my woman’s people are down there.

Hat they did to Bolso is almost identical to what was done to Trump & we don’t need a communist continent down there you IDIOT!

We should have a trade surplus with every country, we are the largest market in the world, they should crawl on broken glass to make us the best deals.

Brazil's situation.

The current president, Silva, stole the election from Bolsanaro.

He is now trying to throw him in jail.

He is going after his allies like Musk, when he fined and tried to seize assets. This was done with the backing of the US state dept under biden.

Hmm, this all sounds strikingly familiar.

I continue to encourage people to watch The Mechanism on Netflix. Its a great crime series that's basically a documentary of how politics works in Brazil. Petrobras, Lula, Odebrecht and Operation Car Wash..its all there.

Dear Dick -

What’s your position on out-of-country tree huggers and weather scaredy-cats pushing to ‘save’ the Amazon?…

Westbank, I can tell you have been immersed in the Latin culture.

To my fellow board members, you note that Westbank refers to his wife as "my woman" (mujer). While this may sound crass in American culture, it is much more common in Latin America than referring to your wife as mi esposa (my wife).

Just didnt want the board to think you were some chauvinist.
