OTD - July 9, 1982 - PanAm Flight 759 crashes just after takeoff from MSY

Posted on 7/9/25 at 11:44 am
153 people died after the plane slammed into a Kenner neighborhood shortly after taking off from New Orleans International Airport
This crash was 1 of the reasons a push was made to learn all about microbursts in thunderstorms as that was deemed the reason for the crash

If I remember correctly, 777Tiger was in line to take off and witnessed it.

If you're a weather geek and have time to kill, this presentation by Dr. Leigh Orf about downbursts/microbursts is a good one. He talks some about Dr. Fajita's original study of them, which much of our modern research is based on. Orf has even used supercomputers to model the storms responsible for them and talks about some it it here.

Nash Roberts on tv telling everyone the reason for the crash less than an hour after it happened.

A guy I went to high school with parents were on that plane... He was a grade below me and it was so shocking that someone would lose their parents in a blink of an eye.

My aunt and uncle lived down the street from the crash and I remember them saying how bad the smell of human flesh was

I worked with a lady whose family lived in the affected neighborhood, and had some deaths.
But if you live in the NOLA area long enough you’ll find out you have some “2 degrees of separation” knowledge from that event.

My aunt and uncle were directly under a microburst 3 or 4 years ago. They and their two neighbors (one more or less next door and the other across the road) lost a combined 120+ trees. Just in the yard area my aunt and uncle lost a dozen or so trees, only one of which clipped the tip of their roof and took out part of a deck.
Right over them there was very little rain. The ground wasnt even wet when my uncle got home maybe 20 minutes after it happened and found their driveway completely blocked by downed trees with no explanation. I happened to look at the radar shortly after and got a loop of it saved somewhere. The crazy thing was that not even a quarter mile down the road in either direction it looked like nothing had happened. It was wild.

Was at son's bb game in Metarie. Remember the beepers going off for med folks in stands. Smoke rising over Kenner. Also the police having to club a guy running from scene with arm having a watch on it.

A guy I know, his dad's whole family was killed when the plane hit their house.
He remarried and had another family, but my friend told me his dad was still fricked up from the accident, and was overly protective of his kids.

Wow. You definitely won’t forget that day. I died the media never mentioned that guy bc this is 1st I’ve heard. I do know someone whose parents live in that neighborhood but got super lucky.

I was about a year old when it happened but my family always talked about it
Plus our lady of perpetual help in Kenner has the memorial and we went to Mass there sometimes

I was almost directly underneath that news helicopter. It was hovering over a parking lot on Veterans Boulevard for a shopping center across from the intersection with Downs Blvd, which became the entrance to Lafreniere Park. I had just gotten hired at the Godfather's Pizza that was in the back of the shopping center by Pheidippides, the runner's shoe store. There was an electronics shop that had TVs and I saw the news shot from the helicopter on the TVs.
It had rained super hard. There was a smell of fuel and smoke in the air. I was friends with two families who lived on Fairway but it didn't hit their houses.

Not super far from where my cousin lived at the time - like 4 to 5 streets. I'm sure lots here knew somebody similarly situated.

I was running a tugboat that day about 25 air miles away from MSY.
We weren’t supposed to have a TV on in the wheelhouse but that day we did.
It was clear and dry where we were.
Sad, tragic day.
