Why is downtown Baton Rouge so dead?

Every time i got down there it is a ghost town. On weekdays there is like 1 patron for every bar that is open. Feel like the city should do something to fix that. Move a bunch of government agencies into those buildings. Get rid of all those parking lots. Develop some restaurants that overlook the river. Sheesh. It aint rocket science.

I feel like 10 years ago it was at its peak and has died off since. No idea why

Because Kip is dead. Best Mayor a place like Baton Rouge could ask for.

Well, I'm no rocket scientist either but I'll let you use your imagination and give you one guess...

Between downtown and LSU is a ghetto
Between downtown and garden district is a ghetto
Downtown is on an inconvenient island surrounded by the river on the west and the hood on the other sides.

Proximity to north BR.

One of the most dangerous crime infested areas of the country surround it.
With that said, most downtown areas of cities are dying off a slow death. Covid really set it into motion.

Maybe it’s because the rest of us have real jobs. We can’t all be bums hitting bars mid day on a Wednesday

To the OP: oh my sweet summer child. How naive you are that these are the reasons and solutions.

There all in Livingston Parish. Traffic is awful now.

There are like 10 cities in the entire country that don’t have a dead downtown. It would be weird if it didn’t

This is the biggest issue with Downtown BR. It's not contiguous or even that convenient to anything that is not a ghetto hood really.

Well this is just not true at all.

1) BR is really spread out and there are some pretty decent neighborhood dives
2) it's a pain in the arse to go there
3) crime
On paper, it could be a great area... in reality, I'd rather go to Perkins overpass, a brewery, or George's and slam some onion rings while getting hammered watching the game

When are we getting our trolleys? One down Nicholson and government would be used.

Broom ruined it with woke law enforcement policies like not addressing homeless drug addicts. Everything Kip built Broom destroyed.

Same reason all that land on Nicholson between LSU and downtown is still undeveloped.
The solution is easy but it would be deemed racist. Oh well, live in your shite hole.
