The United States only has about 25% of the Patriot missile interceptors it needs for all of the Pentagon’s military plans after burning through stockpiles in the Middle East in recent months, an alarming depletion that led to the Trump administration freezing the latest transfer of munitions to Ukraine.

The stockpile of the Patriot missiles has fallen so low that it raised concern inside the Pentagon that it could jeopardize potential US military operations, and deputy defense secretary, Stephen Feinberg, authorized the transfer to be halted while they reviewed where weapons were being sent.

Donald Trump appeared to reverse at least part of that decision on Monday when he told reporters in advance of a dinner at the White House with Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he would “send some more weapons” to Ukraine, although he did not disclose whether that would include Patriot systems.

quote:

But the determination last month to halt the transfer, as described by four people directly familiar with the matter, was based in large part on the Pentagon’s global munitions tracker, which is used to generate the minimum level of munitions required to carry out the US military’s operations plans.

According to the tracker, which is managed by the joint chiefs of staff and the Pentagon’s defense security cooperation agency, the stockpiles of a number of critical munitions have been below that floor for several years since the Biden administration started sending military aid to Ukraine.

Production seems awfully low, especially at the rate we have been using them lately.

quote:

The US Army has awarded Lockheed Martin a contract to expand production capacity for the Patriot Advanced Capability – 3 (PAC-3) missile to 650 units annually.

Lockheed emphasized that this initiative is a crucial step in meeting the growing global demand for “the world’s most advanced missile.”

This year, missile production increased by 30 percent, with projections indicating a further 20 percent rise next year.

entitlements

People don't even know what the word entitled means anymore.

If you pay for something, you're entitled to it.

So the missiles we were sending to UKR are the same missiles we would use to defend ourselves?

Shirley there is different programming on them for us vs the Ukraine ones

Maybe so but it is based on a release by the company making them.

Yes but patriots aren’t for homeland defense. We have other missiles and missile platforms that perform a multitude of missions at different envelopes.

We don’t need Patriots to defend the homeland. Close most of the overseas bases and this isn’t an issue.

Advanced missile intercept systems are hella expensive and require a lot of technology. In a hot war they’re going to be gone within a week without a massive mobilization. Keeping them stockpiled is critical to winning any future near peer conflict.

We aren't. Lockhead, Raytheon, Aerojet/L3 Harris, General Dynamics all going full steam ahead since last Trump term. Been ramping it up big time since re-election and putting the foot to the floor now.

With that low production rate, it is no wonder stockpiles are dwindling. I can't imagine a shooting war with China etc. Like you said after a week it would get really interesting.

The other part of the problem is we are using our super-duper expensive missiles to shoot down relatively cheap drones/missiles. I know Anduril and others are working on a more cost-effective approach. Hopefully something for that mission is fast-tracked.

Going to take years to build back up but they plan to.

quote:

The US Army has approved a substantial increase in its procurement objective for PAC-3 MSE missiles, aiming for a total of 13,773, a quadrupling of the previous goal. This indicates a long-term strategy for rebuilding the stockpile.

And the others? Not to mention that social security is on shaky ground. Not to derail the thread.

What exactly does “all the plans” mean…

We have plans for everything. In a pentagon vault there’s a plan to invade England…

Need more info.
