WBB has to make more revenue or cut expenses

Losing 8.5 million in one season is not going to cut it in today's college athletics climate.
People want to talk about exposure and social media presence, but that is not showing up on the bottom line.
Subsidizing other sports is not going to work in this new world of revenue- driven business.
I know that everyone wants a successful program for women's basketball and a successful program for track and field. At what cost do you want that success?

I wouldn’t say everyone.

If it helps LSU football and baseball become or continue to stay dominant, then I don’t give a flying shite if Women’s basketball ever wins another game.

I guarantee you CKM will get whatever she needs as long as she's here. ...the coach after her idk

I’m going to trust people in the AD to figure it out for now. If women’s basketball, or any sport is having a significant negative impact on football, I believe they’ll make changes. However for the time being, Mulkey has the AD by the balls lol

When that exposure leads to increased enrollment then it’s absolutely on the bottom line. When the tv deals increase because of the performance it’s on the bottom line.

Neither you nor I can put any sort of number on how many people have decided to come to LSU because of women's basketball.

How much has the women's basketball television deal increased? Since coach mulkey has been at the helm? I would need you to look that up for me.

Maybe so and maybe not. It must be nice to have a job with millions of dollars of resources and no expectation of making money. Honestly, no such expectation to come close to making any money. Quite the welfare Queen.

I mean, this is the story of women’s basketball. It’s been incubated and subsidized and over-marketed relative to the return for decades. It’s a novelty, like watching the actual game in slow motion. And no matter what they try to sell you, the skill level is mostly poor. Sure, you get a Caitlin Clark rolling through from time to time but for the most part they play like girls. Nothing wrong with that, but you can’t then say it’s a product worth all that much. True basketball fans recognize this from the start. The new sports adjacent fans they try to attract basis women’s empowerment etc angles are lukewarm. And women themselves don’t give two shits. The skit Bill Burr does about this is spot on. The Kardashians are billionaires while the best women’s basketball player on the planet flies coach because women themselves don’t care.

The TV deal is with the SEC so maybe Mulkey being at LSU slightly impacted the conferences deal but I don't think can say one or the other how LSU and Mulkey alone impacted the deal. Fact remains WBB lost 8.5 million. Woody needs to tell Kim that her current deal is her last. She can retire and ride off into the sunset. LSU will not renew her deal and will be moving on and hiring a new coach for pennies on the dollar and will run a bare bones program from now on. Losing 8.5 million is unacceptable.

Pretty sure tv revenue is split throughout the conference. Not sure if there is extra money given to schools if their teams advance further in the NCAA tournament.
Media rights are much higher for men's basketball than woman. It's a similar situation between the USMNT and USWNT (US men and women's soccer) where the men just have to make it to the World Cup tournament and they will make more tv money than the women if they won the whole thing.

The fact anyone thinks that we a) have basically anyone coming to school because women’s basketball is good is hilarious and b) if 50 people did, those kids are not offsetting the losses at all. We have lost almost $20 mil total in the last 3 years (the numbers for this past season aren’t even out, I would think we will be around negative $30 mil in 4 season). Baseball is essentially a wash but should make some this season.
As much as people don’t care about basketball, this is why it is imperative to have a good basketball program. Our bball program is making a few mil but could easily make $10+. That would not be a huge deal if women’s basketball was not just KILLING our budget.
And fyi for those not understanding- when a sport loses multi millions a year, this is why you can’t fire or buyout dome coaches and have to just hope they turn it around

Baseball lost money in 2023, what makes you think it’s going to make money this year? And this is coming from as big as a baseball fan as you’ll find.

Hate to say it, but if a sport is losing a large amount of money it should be cut.
Sorry, but this is an institute for learning, not for producing athletic teams to entertain fans.

Not sure I agree with this, she is a 1 of 1, a Tiger Woods of her sport. She has literally changed the WNBA from private flights, venues, viewership etc.

Two fold since LSUs first WBB Natty,
LSU, Angel Reese, Catlyn Clark, and the Race baiter w/ SC have since doubled tv viewership in 3 short years.

For all intents and purposes only football makes money. They fund everyone else.
So the question hasn’t changed really, it’s simply which sports does LSU want to fund or not fund.

Agree. Problem is once you opt in title ix applies. Now, I personally believe title ix has worn out its welcome but the law doesn't see it that way yet. Equality does not require charity. Title ix is charity, therefore equality for women as it pertains to sports is a myth. Among many other areas.

That is what La Tech did with their once dominate womens basketball program.
