The calendar has turned to July 1, and that means one thing: It's time for Mets fans everywhere to wish each other a Happy Bobby Bonilla Day! Why? On Tuesday, 62-year-old Bobby Bonilla will collect a check for $1,193,248.20 from the New York Mets, as he has and will every July 1 from 2011 through 2035.

Dodgers hedged their bet because Shohei’s a degenerate gambler and will end up getting whacked by the Yakuza when he can’t pay his debts.

Multiple players have since signed these deferred contracts.

The Orioles deal with Chris Davis was terrible.

I know Bobby gets the game but he isn't even close to the worst one

Ohtani (2043)
Freeman
Chris Davis (2037)
Mookie Betts
Max Scherzer
Manny Ramirez (2026)
Lindor
Edwin Diaz
Alex Rodriguez
Ken Griffey Jr
Patrick Corbin
Brett Saberhagen (gets paid 250k until 2028 from Mets)
Bobby Bonilla (2035 from Mets) (2028 from Orioles)

It's been years since i've looked at it but this was a good deal for the mets had they invested it even just a little bit wisely. But instead, they went with Bernie Madoff and well you know the rest.

I could be wrong as finance is not my go-to. But this financial arrangement may be a win-win.

The Mets signed Mike Hampton, went to the world series a couple of times and drafted David Wright largely because of the money saved by dumping Bonilla's contract.

Also, the $6 million he was owed, if invested properly, could have a return interest that would offset the $1 million Bonilla gets annually.

right, but they didn't do so. They went with Madoff. Now the poor investment after the fact doesn't negate the wise decision on Bonilla's contract, but people tend to conflate the two together. Incorrectly so, but it happens, which is why this thread gets started every single year.

It actually was a decent financial decision. Investing the money with Bernie Madoff was not, however.

Is Bonilla the original deferred payment deal in MLB?

Or was there other similar deals prior that just didn't get as much notoriety as Bobby B's?

Wow that’s like 1/60 of what they pay Juan Soto per year

It still doesn't make sense to me why it gets notoriety. These deals are typically better for the team

I think it’s more the principle of the thing, anger that this guy collects that much money for doing absolutely nothing, than any real financial burden on the Mets that pisses people off so much about this.

Because most of the world aren't accountants/financial advisors, or don't understand accounting principles. TVM is very hard for many people to follow.

Plenty of deals like this prior, Braves paid 1 million to Bruce Sutter until 2021 and he hadn't played since 1988.

No Bret Saberhagen was the first.
The year before the strike, he sign a deal that paid him quarter of a million per year for a quarter of a century, it would start in 20 years.
So from 2004 until 2029, he gets $250,000. Its paid monthly, $21k per month for 300 months

edt- Saberhagen and Bonilla were teammates at the time, and Bret's deal inspired Bobby to do the same.

Saberhagen got the idea to approach the Mets with the deal, due to what the Royals had been doing. Dan Quisenberry and George Brett had contracts that involved them owning real estate companies with the Royals. Quisenberry reportedly received over $40 million from a real estate partnership with the Royals he didn't even know he owned. He told a story about staying in a hotel in Nashville, he didn't know he was the owner of the hotel.

It makes me wonder then if the madoff fiasco is why this deal has gotten such notoriety over all the other instances.
