For those of you who have had both, which tailgate is your preference? What do you see as a pro and a con to each?

Think split or flex gate is a gimic can’t see any purpose in it at all. It never seemed to help me do anything.

Regular. Less lines on a truck the better.

What is the major selling point of these?

I’m ok with the GM multifunction tailgate. I can’t get past the vertical line on the Ram or the vertical lines on the Ford tailgates though.

Split gate looks ridiculous. Can't stand the vertical seam.

For body shops to make money after you put a dent in the tailgate from the ball mount.

I want a regular tail gate. No stupid auto latch or assisted close or any of that crap either.

I actually use my truck. The least amount of frufru shite on it to break the better.

GM multifunction tailgate

My buddy has this and it's pretty sweet and very useful as either a bench to sit on or a step to access the bed. But one major design flaw is that it can be accidentally opened while driving. This happened to him and it caused some damage.

The Dodge tailgate in the best one. The ones from Chevy and Ford are stupid.

No to split. But the ridgeline dual action side swing tailgate is the best.

Agree with those saying the split through the tailgate is not aesthetically pleasing but it is very functional.

I have the ram with the split or barn door tailgate. It's pretty much all I use now, very rarely drop the tailgate down in a normal fashion. It allows you to get right up next to the bed, so when you are loading stuff you don't have to reach and lean over the tailgate to load it or unload it. Or try to drag stuff over a spray bed liner that doesn't slide.

I thought it was a gimmick but it's extremely useful.

Are these normal now because the tailgates are heavier? They look taller than old trucks.

That would be my guess, that and the fact you see more women driving trucks now. The tailgate on my truck is pretty heavy. An assist would be nice, but would also be something else that will tear up eventually.

There is a trend for SUVs to have a small "tailgate" so the hatch does not come all the way down. Some like this feature, but we have a friend who has a V90 who hates it. She is fairly short, and the little tailgate sticks out far enough that she can't reach the stuff in the back.

I assume you are talking about the barn door style split gate on a dodge? Be nice if you were loading stuff in your truck with a forklift so you could set the load completely in the back of the truck without having to sit it partially on the tailgate and slide it in. I have seen a lot of tailgate cables broken with guys loading pallets of seed and sitting them on the tailgate.
