On a tractor, do you use 4 wheel drive most or all of the time when mowing hilly terrain?

call if bush hogging if you prefer, but my place is pretty hilly, whatever you call it. On most of the fields I can use 2wd but I still have to put in 4wd pretty often to get traction out of a low spot, or more often, on a hillside. On a hillside 4wd is certainly safer, but whether or not staying in 4wd is bad for the mechanics of a tractor is debateable.

If you are having to click it on and off pretty often then I'd just leave it on until you need to make a sharp turn

Size of tractor and style of tires will dictate if you need it in 4x4 all the time.

My lil tractor with industrial style tires I need 4x4 almost all the time due to tractor not weighing crap. I literally can’t pull an implement without using 4x4.

I leave all farm equipment in 4WD all the time. My 17 YO Kubota has been in 4WD since the day I got it. No issues with it.

Its a tractor. Just leave it engaged if it makes you feel better.

Leave it on. Don’t worry about wear. It’s made for that.

Do whatever. Personally I hardly ever use 4wd unless it's muddy. I guess it's because most of my life i never had a 4wd tractor, just diff lock.

I do occasionally have to stomp my right heel on the diff lock.

I call it brush hogging even though my rotary cutter is a 6' heavy duty Rhino Ag.

Before this Kubota, which I've had for about 8 years now, I had an early 60's Massey Ferguson, but it didn't take me long to appreciate a 4wd.

I do generally just leave it in 4wd on the hilly parts, and on all of the fields when it's wet, and never really thought about it till I overheard some guys discussing it at a local softball game recently.

I'm going with the opinions of most of you. Thanks again.

Leave it in 4WD all the time as long as you are on something that gives like dirt, gravel, etc. 2WD on hard surfaces like concrete unless you are not turning and then 4WD is OK to pull straight ahead.
