Rumors are swirling that a Top Gun 3 may be in the works... (Yahoo!)

While it took roughly 36 years before the sequel to Tom Cruise’s iconic Top Gun movie hit theaters, the third installment seems as though it won’t leave fans waiting nearly as long.
Although there's no specific release date, recent rumors indicate a premiere sometime in 2028 or 2029 for Top Gun 3. That'd still be around 6-7 years after Top Gun: Maverick hit theaters, but fans will surely take that over the alternate.
With the film currently in development, director Joseph Kosinski, fresh off directing the highly anticipated F1 movie starring Brad Pitt, teased a few details of Top Gun 3 in a recent interview with GQ.
Although Kosinski didn't give much away, one specific statement jumped out, and it signaled the potential that this could be the final ride for Tom Cruise's character, Maverick.
"Yeah, there's still more story to tell for [Maverick]," Kosinski said. "There's one last ride. So we're working on it now."
GQ's Jack King correctly cited Top Gun: Maverick as what felt like a "baton-passing film," which makes these comments interesting from Kosinski. As King also stated, Cruise's role sounds "pretty central" to the third film, which Kosinski essentially agreed with.
It'll be interesting to see how the plot for Top Gun 3 comes together, but it's expected that Miles Teller and Glen Powell will return and reprise their roles. Beyond that, it's anyone's guess at this moment how the storyline will come together, but it does sound like Cruise could be wrapping up Maverick's role in the franchise.
maybe it's not a rumor, but more of a confirmation?

Gotta cash in on the Iran-US hostility while you still can.

If Cruise wants to do it noone else is gonna stop it being made.
2 wrapped up the story pretty well though.

How does the unwritten script for Top Gun 3 exploit the two days of hostilities that just occurred?

One word: aliens
Then it’d basically be an Independence Day remake, but probably still entertaining.

Literally “flew off into the sunset” in TGM. Do not want a third TG.
That being said, I’ll be there for it opening weekend, take my money

I have. A great film. I asked a question about the third unwritten movie that won't be out until 2028 at the earliest.

I like how she looks now (in the movie) than how she looked back in the day, but she generally looks different in regular real-life shots.

If I had to take a guess I’d speculate that tensions with a Far East adversary heat up and an aerial encounter with a Chinese/North Korean “ace” ends with Mav on the wrong end of a Fox one missile shot.
Rooster and Hangman team up to return the favor

Can't wait until they shoot down a NGAD fighter using a ww1 tri-plane

I remember hearing about 2 for years. How it was delayed. The production issues. Rewrites excetra. I thought it was going to be a huge bomb and suck worse than the Independence day sequel. Instead it was really easily one of the best action movies of the last 20 years. I saw it a few times in theaters.

It needs to be about the Iran strike. That would be epic

if they kill off Mav instead of letting him continue to pound Penny Benjamine to death forever, I'll be pissed.

Who do you think they were bombing in TG: Maverick?
I don’t think audiences are clamoring for Mav to cruise at high altitude for 30 hours, take a dump, press a button, and turn around.
