Coolest Thing I've Done, In a Long Time. Porsche Driving Experience.

I had a buddy buy a Porsche 911 GTS Targa recently and his dealer invited him and a couple of friends to Barber Motorsports Park Porsche Driving Experience.
Really had no idea what to expect, but we made the road trip to Barber Motorsports Park, outside of Birmingham. I was the only Tundra in the parking lot.
The break us into groups and my group hit the big track first. Barber Motorsports Park is a motorcycle track, with great turns and elevation changes. Indy cars run a race there too. It's the Augusta National of tracks too. Beautifully landscaped and art installations all throughout the grounds.
The instructor jumps into the first car, in a line of cars, and we pair up and take the cars behind. We would do a lap, switch drivers, do another lap, and then move to the car behind you and repeat.
We started in a 911 Turbo, moved to a GT3, 718, and then a GTS (I think). (PIC BELOW, behind the GT3 RS)
The laps started tame, instructor was talking to us via radio, describing braking points, turn apex, accel points, general lines on the track. Progressively, the laps got faster, harder braking, and harder accelerations.
After that, we took a "hot lap" with an instructor in the 911 GT3 RS, instructor driving, we were passengers. This was the most violent mechanical experience I've had. I've pulled 8.5gs in the back of an F-15 and ridden dirtbikes my entire life. This lap was more violent. What was shocking to me was how hard I was hanging in the seat belt during the braking. Literally pinned to the seat during acceleration and then hanging against the seat belt. Felt like one pedal was on the floor the entire time, the gas was smashed or the brakes were smashed, nothing in between.
Hot lap launch- (guess only one embedded video per post)

We then swapped areas and headed to the skid pad in 911 GTS & Tacan Turbo S demo. Really thought I'd do better on the skid pad than I did, just because I have a little experience drifting and finding the balance. Not sure if it was the rear engine or what, but as soon as the rear would lose traction, I couldn't outdrive it, it was coming around. You get a few laps without traction control and then you turn it on. It definitely made a difference, but you still had to drive it with the traction control on.

Next was a ride as a passenger in the Tacan Turbo S, 0-60mph in 2.3, finished at the back cones at 80+. 2.3 to 60 is fun as hell.
Youtube Link
We then did a lane change exercise that sounds lame, but was pretty dang fun. Just kept getting faster and faster. The instructor is watching and critiquing and giving tips over the radio.
Youtube Link
Next a road course in Caymans, which I loved to drive. I know they get crapped on, but I couldn't get it to slide at all. I tried.

We also did a separate road course in a few different Panamera models. I didn't film any.
My group finished on the proving ground. Instructor in a 911 in front, we were chasing in Caymans. This was probably my favorite event. I definitely drove the hardest I did all day. The instructor said if we kept it a car length or two behind him, he'd keep pushing harder each lap. I was the car behind him, and stayed glued to his bumper. When we finished he gave me knuckles and told me I was driving my arse off. Made me feel

This was a freaking awesome day. If I hit the lotto, I'm taking all my friends and family. I've driven fast cars before, but I've never driven fast cars as hard as I could, over and over. It was super cool. I had the most fun on the road courses & proving grounds. Maybe if I ended the experience on the big track instead of starting there, I'd have like it the most. Definitely was driving harder and more confidently at the end of the day.
There are Porsche Driving Experiences in ATL, Barber Motorsports Park, and Laguna Seca now.
Side note- All these videos aren't me driving, I was filming others doing the events.

I’ve done the C8 school at Spring Mountain outside of Vegas and that is an absolute blast. Looking forward to doing it again in the Z06. You think you can drive and then get on track with an instructor who knows how to squeeze performance and you get humbled real fast. Performance driving schools are awesome and I highly recommend if at all interested in

There's a mid stream company named after that car. Made me a good chunk since covid.

I have experience here, in miniature form. I was a go cart mechanic on the beach for 3 years. We had a large road course and a slick oval, with baby powder on the track. I could outdrive anyone on that came on the track.
Well, the new owner was a racecar driver and he and his driver buddies come out one night to drive. The jump on the slick track, first time they'd ever been there, and they're having fun. I jump in a cart, knowing I'm about to dust these rednecks. Now, I'm probably 150lbs at this point, and these are big arse dudes. 220lbs plus, I know I'm about to embarrass them, especially with the weight advantage. WRONG.
These dudes could flat drive and my teenage ego took a hit that day.

Awesome... Years ago, I did the Richard Petty Driving school at Atlanta Motor Speedway. Not as in depth as that but did 8 hot laps and that was pretty fun. Its amazing at 160mph, how much momentum you lose if you take your foot off the accelerator.

Mrs. Tantal bought me 7 laps at SpeedVegas a few years ago. I was supposed to drive a GT3, but it broke down that day. Settled for the Acura NSX and was not disappointed. Fastest car I've ever driven by far.

I navigate Asian women and busted Altimas every single day on the Houston freeways. I think I could handle a race track.

I did this exact experience 2 years ago and it was a great experience. It gave me a whole new respect for what those professional race car drivers do.

I’m sure he tells this to all the ladies.
Nah, I’m just jealous. Sounds awesome.

Actually, there was a lady, probably 5’2”, in my group. Any time I heard ridiculous squealing tires, it was her. She did take out some cones, but she came to drive and she was sending it.

Very cool!
You described an awesome day very well.
Taking a car to its limits on the track is epic.
I had a track day gifted to me... Lambo Huracan at Speed Vegas...
One of the top 5 days of my life.
Thanks for sharing

That sounds incredible. How many total hours on site?

Do you remember your instructor's name? I have a friend that teaches there. We go karting together some, and he whoops my arse. He's been after me to get down and do the Porsche school.

I did it several years ago and it’s pretty awesome. I had a pulled muscle in my neck after the hot lap. Violent is the right word. Those instructors opened my eyes as to what those cars could really do.

8:00 to 12:00pm. We did take it to the museum afterwards. It’s the largest motorcycle museum and Lotus museum in the world or US, or maybe just the zip code. But it’s huge.

I probably knew a few names when I left there, but it’s been weeks and I’ve killed those brain cells. All those guys were very cool, though. You should pester your friend until he hooks you up. It’s badass.

The Barber track and the associated Motorsports Museum is the most impressive tourist attraction in Alabama.

Welcome to brutal world of snap oversteer, it’s terrifying especially the first time you experience it when you’re used to front engined cars

I’ve been lucky enough to do the BMW driving experience a couple of times. It was an awesome experience. It’s unbelievable what the team drivers can do with those cars. I never was a huge BMer fan but those little M3s with the racing packages are fun as hell.

I know the owners of the “Shake” and “Bake” Porsches that are instructors at that Porsche Driving Experience location.
