Derrick Todd Lee...What was it like around Baton Rouge at that time?

I stated doing some research after reading other thread about one of DTL’s victims house being for sale. I remember hearing about it while it was happening but being a kid I was pretty naive to what was truly going on.
What was it like around Baton Rouge at that time? Were people really paranoid or was that exaggerated? Did any of you with a white pickup truck get strange looks? Any other interesting stories pertaining to DTL?

It was wild. Cops were swabbing the cheeks every white male in a white pickup truck. Women were afraid to be alone after dark.

It was awful around LSU, ladies were very worried all the time. Messed with a lot of things. Exercising around the lakes, going to do things alone, etc.

Yes - there was fear all around the area because a few of the bodies were also found in and around the Acadiana area. Don't forget that there were like 2 other serial killers at the same time as DTL as well... Sean Gillis was one.
As far as DTL, I knew someone who was a nurse at Angola that had a few interactions with him. She claimed the isolation had driven him insane (if he was ever sane to begin with), and he looked at every woman in the prison with pure hatred.

When they shoe printed him from the lafayette murder. I knew he was not white like they alleged(unless this was a ploy). Also knew when this shoe(BK's) was popular and guessed his age range and missed by 2 years. I called the hotline and gave them my thoughts. At the time my sister said they were putting police drawings of a man who was white in the paper. No way he was white wearing BKs. He was poor and wore those shoes most likely because he wore them in school also. You'd have to be a coach/athlete to understand shoes trends past/present and future.

It was a pretty scary time. I was going hunting early one morning and saw a white van driving slowly around my buddy's neighborhood so I followed it. Turns out they were throwing newspapers.

I was living in those apartments on Stanford by the lakes (torn down and something newer there now). I remember driving home and the street was semi blocked with cops everywhere. I remember that house and got such an eerie feeling. Turned on the news and realized how bad it was.
It was wild in Baton Rouge during that time. National news was covering it all and folks were genuinely apprehensive about just getting gas. But life had to go on.
Glad they got him. Eventually.

I knew a few guys who lived across from the Pace murder. (Sharlo) They were inside in the middle of the day and they heard screams. It was her roommate walking in on the aftermath. Apparently was one of the most gruesome scenes BRPD has had.
I remember a checkpoint on Burbank and East Boyd. They had no leads and just stopping everyone to see if they saw anything.

Does anyone have a map of the murders?

A guy I knew was around Sharlo the day Charlotte Murray Pace was killed and saw DTL walking through a yard with blood all over him. He tried to tell the cops about it and they blew him off and said they were looking for a white guy.
Not sure if they got back in touch with him during the murder trial or not.

I just read the court docs and good god DTL was an evil dude. What he did to Pace was unsettling just to read.

I was in college and working at Jim's Firearms... we'd have people lined up waiting for us to get shipments of pepper spray in, and people were buying guns left and right

I don't remember, what did he do to her?

I worked for a contractor at Dow Chemical in Plaquemine, LA at the time. I had to drive outside of the plant in order to smoke a cigarette. I would go out to Hwy. 1 and find a safe spot to park. When the whole DTL thing hit I would be visited by a deputy or some type of LEO every time I parked. The funny thing is it was usually the same cops daily. Strange days indeed.

This dude even killed Pam Kinamore and then drove across the basin with her dead body with him. How sick is that.

Well, the official report is that she bled out but they found a bloody iron as well as many other stab wounds, some thin like a screwdriver made it and others wider like a knife.
When her roommate found her, she was mostly nude and there was a ton of blood in the bedroom but also throughout the rest of the townhouse as well. DNA evidence showed that he did rape her as semen was found on the lower part of her buttocks very close to her vagina.
As for the wounds themselves, she had blunt force trauma to the head area including a skull fracture and blunt trauma to the eyes which we assume was where he hit her with the iron. She had stab wounds through her left eye socket into her skull, multiple wounds to her heart, liver, and lungs. In total, she had 81 different stab wounds. He also cut her throat from the cartilage at the top of her neck, gashed open her esophagus and also severed her left jugular.
Saddest part was that she had defensive wounds on her arms and hands, indicating that she did try to defend herself for at least some time during the attack.
TLDR: He basically bashed her head in, stabbed her 81 times and cut her throat so deep it damn near decapitated her. Unknown if he raped her before or after she lost consciousness/expired.

I was working nights at the time and the wife (no pics) was scared to death every night when I left the house.
We lived in an older house in Denham Springs at the time with a laundry room that could be accessed from the carport door, which was an interior door that was completely insufficient for use as an exterior door. My mother could have ripped it off the hinges.
The DTL murders motivated me to swap out that door, install a deadbolted metal exterior door, and buy my wife her first handgun.
