I know this is very vague but curious what the OT ballers who can afford inground pools consider to be the best or worst options for a pool.

Stay away from the led bubblers. They are expensive and always break.

I enjoy my hot tub and a chiller is a must for me in Texas/LA area. Also some sort of deck jet or waterfall feature.

If you live in the South then get a chiller, which drops the water temp fifteen degrees or so.

Go with an established contractor for pools with a long history and reputation. Biggest complaint I’ve seen about pools is getting ghosted mid job or when things go wrong.

However much decking you have, add more. You will want the room.
Add umbrella holes in your decking and even in your shallow end/tanning ledge (if you have one).
Chiller is probably a good idea, I am close to pulling the trigger on adding one to mine. Saltwater.

Don’t.

It will be the biggest money drain (pun intended) you will ever purchase.

Constant maintenance and repairs.

Get a quality cover for the winter, preferably one that stretches so tight the dog can walk out on it without getting more than its paws wet. Also, safety fence around it in case the neighbor's kid is a wandering little bastard.

Don’t have tall trees close to pool. Especially palms. They dump shite in the pool year round.

Biggest not have is a pool. Huge PITA and its not going to get as much use as you think - especially what you are going to pay for it.

1. Plumbing - make sure they’re using all 2” piping, no 1.5”
—larger pipes carry more water. Pumps work less.
—try to lay out the plumbing trenches where they’re accessible if they leak
—straight trenches, use 90s, not 45s

2. Pentair equipment. Maybe Jandy.
—automation panel a must

3. Rebar should be 1/2” and not 3/8”

4. Salt water in the south.

5. Install the automatic refill system.

6. Landscaping budget should be huge. They’re going to destroy everything

I hope he isn't depending on his Christmas bonus to cover the deposit check that the wrote. With this economy, they'll likely cut out the Christmas bonuses this year and give the employees something dumb, like a year membership in the Jelly of the Month Club.
