My Daughter Wants Some Home Protection
Posted on 6/19/25 at 9:52 pm

Background: My daughter is a wacked-out screaming liberal who told her husband she never wanted a gun in their house. However, now she has reconsidered. That was probably a smart thing to do considering they live in St. Louis.
I told her to buy a semi-automatic youth model 20 gauge shotgun. My reasoning is that the size would be easier for a woman to handle and it would not kick too badly. Also it would be easier to just pull the trigger when she wants to fire it without having to pump out the spent shell.
What say yea? Did I give her good advice or can someone suggest something better?

12 gauge pump with 000 buck. She only has to shoot it once (hopefully).

Is she large? Or regular/small?
A medium sized female with no experience with a shotgun is a bad idea IMO.
She needs to feel comfortable with whatever weapon chosen, or its practically pointless.
Go with a sub compact 9mm or .380 with a laser sight.

Tell her to call a social worker in the heat of the moment to de-escalate any situations

That’s what my daughter carried to her college rental house. She used it when she was younger to shoot doves. I took out the plug and she put 5, 00 buck shot shells in it.

Sorry your daughter is crazy but unless she's gonna get trained she's a danger to herself and her family. I think the gun you recommended is fine but without training she's an accident waiting to happen.
Does her husband know how to shoot?

Tell her to find a good range to get some lessons in safety, familiarity and accuracy. Offer to buy her classes.
I second the 'get a dog' suggestion as well.

Pump shotgun in any gauge it’s the sound that gets ya. You could always add a laser to it for even more fun.

You've seen too many movies. A gun you have to load is useless.

Check out one of those Byrna non lethal guns. At least if she shoots herself or somebody innocent it won’t kill them.
