Going to be in DC in a few weeks .Thinking about Gettysburg for a day

Its a few hour drive. Is it worth the drive? Not a huge history buff but seems more interesting then say williamsburg or Mt Vernon for things to do outside of DC. Sugguestions?

Civil war sties are cool if that’s your thing. Annapolis is close. Richmond, Capital of the Confederacy. I love Williamsburg, Charlottesville with Monticello….all history/America centric towns with shopping, dining

Gettysburg is worth it. Went 25 years ago with my Dad on a driving trip of Civil War battlefields. If you only have a day it's well worth it, though 2 gives a chance to walk the whole battlefield. Beautiful scenery, monuments from the participating states. It's an experience worth having.
There was also an old restaurant/Inn near Gettysburg. Doobins House, that I don't remember what I ate but I remember it was good.

Definitely worth the drive. Get the personal driving tour guide at Gettysburg. It’ll be worth the few extra bucks especially if you only have a day. Really need a couple of days there. Mt. Vernon is cool to see as well. I did the river cruise several years ago. Do the behind the scene tour if they still offer it.

Did a bus tour of dc that was very nice, great tour guide. also capitol tour is pretty cool. Suggest doing both

I have visited Gettysburg several times over the years and would HIGHLY recommend it to anyone remotely interested in the Civil War.

If you're trying to get outside the city I would also recommend Annapolis

Annapolis the town is nice, but I wouldn't waste your time visiting the second rate school that's located there!

Hire the Ranger drive tour guide. Best money spent. But they may be booked.

I have been and it’s a good visit. A lot of it is suburban neighborhoods now. Still a good historic place though.

I’ve not been to Gettysburg, but Mt Vernon is a great day trip from DC.

I went in summer of 2002 also from DC. It’s worth it. The reenactment is in the morning before lunch. The only way I remember that is the group I was with went to eat lunch at an Arby’s in the downtown part of the small town Gettysburg and their were Union and Confederate soldiers mixed together in booths eating Big Bufords together in harmony.

It’s worth the drive for sure. You could also see Fredricksburg. Williamsburg was good, mt Vernon, typical DC sites, museums on the mall were great.

This is part of the reenactment. During the battle they called a brief ceasefire to share roast beefs and curly fries.

I think it's worth being able to know you went to such hollowed ground. When I reenacted it long ago was a major life experience.

Gettysburg is worth seeing, but then I like historical sites and it's a good one. I've been several times. The battlefield abuts the town, so it goes from hallowed ground to Gatlinburg very quickly. For that reason, I think Antietam is a nicer battlefield and is about the same distance from DC.
Bull Run is also close to DC. Mt. Vernon is worth seeing, and I thought it was interesting to see all the stuff Washington was into. He was one of the wealthiest men in the colonies.
I've also been to Williamsburg. They have done a great job of preserving the houses and showing visitors how people lived back in the day. My wife is from that area, so old houses are pretty familiar to us. We enjoyed seeing Yorktown more. Annapolis is a cool place. When we went, you could wander through the Naval Academy. Access may be more restricted now, so I'd check on that. You might need to plan in advance to see Mt. Vernon too. Gettysburg will have a lot of visitors this time of year.
