Harrison's boat hit an object in the water, and the 40-horsepower vehicle then circled the surrounding area unmanned, eventually striking him, the LDWF release said.

According to the LDWF, Harrison was wearing a life jacket, but he did not appear to be wearing a “kill switch lanyard,” which is designed to remotely shut off a boat’s engine if the driver is ejected. (The LDWF explained that a kill switch lanyard is technically required for a boat the size and power of the one Harrison had been operating.)

Gotta wear your kill switch people. It'll save lives.

Terrible. I have to constantly remind myself to wear a lanyard.

This story reminds me of Donald Tabb. also a minister that dies in a boating accident in Venice. RIP

This is exactly why I wear my kill switch every time I am on plane, but not my PFD. My hot foot would slow the boat down a good bit, but something bad could still happen.

I clip mine to my belt loop if I'm not wearing a life jacket on a short run. The older I get the more I find myself putting on a life jacket for most runs anyway and clipping the kill switch to the life jacket.

I've gotten into this habit and wear mine every time I get on plane. 99% of the time I'm alone and I've cheated death too many times already.

Absolutely, another good practice is to get a zip-up style life jacket and keep it hooked up to the kill cord. Quick and easy to throw it on, zip up and go. That way you aren’t messing with the clip all day.

Once it’s a habit you may even feel awkward without it on.

I’ve also noticed that game wardens/sheriff have a much better first impression if you’ve already got a life jacket on and cord attached.

Anyone who has been thrown out of the boat will agree, there’s nothing you could have done to hang on, and you’re processing it as you are going underwater.

This is what I do. Throw it on the throttle lever so I have to move it to crank the engine.

Took me a good long while to get used to. I still occasionally leave the helm while hooked up and kill the engine accidentally.

This is true. I’ve been stopped a half dozen times. Once they observe that I can handle a boat, am wearing an inflatable with lanyard attached and that I’m drinking water, they tell you to have fun.

They don’t look at anything else

Or just clip it back to itself and slip it over your wrist. It’s incredibly easy.

I never used to do it in a center console because for some reason never thought it would be possible to get thrown out of one, but shite happens.

Also with inflatable PFDs there’s not much of an excuse not to wear one running, especially when you’re alone.

Idling out of a cove not too long ago and GW was looking through binocs at me. Didn’t even bother to check me and I waved as I went by.

I never wore one on any boat until I had kids.

Was awfully hypocritical of me to demand they wear one yet me never wear one, so I decided to not be a piece of shite and set a good example for my kids.

Has been a net positive. I ALWAYS wear the kill switch and nearly always wear the life jacket. Im not perfect yet but im getting better every trip.

Well when your diet is whatever beer you can get and your past time is swimming in the intercoastal canal, you generally dont worry about such things.

I run a 23' cat and wear my PFD with kill switch attached any time I'm at the helm, including in the Amite & Diversion. It's a habit at this point.

This^^^ Several time should have gotten tickets for other violations but I believe because I had a life jacket and kill switch lanyard on they let me slide.
