1st pitch beach balls

Is this team taught to not swing at 1st pitch more so than not? It's an honest question - It almost seems like they're not even prepared to swing at the first pitch they just conced it. If that happens again they need to start taking those over the fence.
Jones needs to stop all the movement at the plate the bending backwards drifting back with the bat then slowly tilting up then slowly getting into position - it's bad enough we have several players who choke up several inches on a bat on the first pitch so you know they're not a threat.

You are correct, the CWS is definitely the time and place to change your swing and stance that you have used all year.

Any hit is a threat with runners on.

May be worth a shot if it can get him out his slump

It's an approach and will change inning by inning/game by game. I suspect our gameplan going into the game on Saturday was to try to see a bunch of pitches and run Root's pitch count up early.
Never mind. You're not serious.

Jones should swing at every pitch and pray for a hit or just stand there and hope for a walk.
frick an “approach”

Okay Tigers4588 on tigerdroppings, I’m sure Mr. Jones really appreciates your hitting advice

In a tournament for the national championship, I want the other teams to use as much pitching as possible. What are you not liking about getting the opposing starter out of the game earlier because of the pitch count?

LSU is 11th in the nation in walks (though that number is a bit skewed because LSU has played more games than the majority of the teams in the NCAA). Still, getting on base via a walk is a big emphasis on offense. So to answer your question, yes, it does appear that LSU's approach is to take a lot of pitches.

We have some people saying the team can't hit worth shite. Seems like a good strategy to draw walks and try to get to the bullpen. It seems to be working well so far.

The main reason I find this hilarious is we had a board full of people pissing and moaning about Tommy White (and others ) swinging at the first pitch in 2023. Heck, we had folks doing that this year.
I do not think that Jay has a philosophy of swinging vs taking on the first swing, except possibly taking on the first at bat vs a pitcher, and I doubt it even then. If a pitcher is walking a lot of guys, I'm sure he may want people to take then because the philosophy is probably a situational one.

There’s pros and cons to each approach. Taking pitches does run up the pitch count, but the negative is passing on the best pitch you’re going to get for the at bat. Players like Curiel can execute this because he has great bat to ball skills and a great sense of the strike zone. Others don’t and end up taking a strike down the middle and then striking out later on a ball well out of the zone

The wind is blowing in, it is going to be extremely hard to ride one out of the park. We work counts to get to the bullpen and look for pitches to drive. Pitchers are going to be throwing the ball to the top of the zone more due to the wind. If you hit the ball its going to be deep fly outs. Need to see the ball down and drive it. Conditions matter.
Also, even if the wind weren't blowing in, the team works counts. Some players are given special approval to swing at the first pitch but that is not every single player and we tend to do better when we drive up the pitch counts instead of just first pitch swinging.

Honestly when you're missing the ball by 6 in off the end of the bat it can't really get any worse - it's sickening enough that he's still in the batting lineup.

I would honestly tell him to cut it the frick out for one at bat and see how it goes. I’m not one to armchair coach regarding players’ mechanics and it normally drives me crazy when people do it because I know the coaches have a ton of data and experience that we don’t, but Jones looks like one of the worst batters in LSU history right now, he’s constantly getting completely embarrassed, and the back bend thing is objectively stupid and he looks uncomfortable.
Just remove that weird piece from the equation and see how it goes one time
