The 1985 thread got me thinking that there are all kinds of music listeners out there.

What genre of music
How we listen to music
How we find music
Do you play music
Etc…

What kind of listener are you?

Some categories

The Casual/Passive Listener:
People who listen to music, but don't really listen. Any music, or at least a broad variety of music, and the music usually won't be front and center stage. It's background noise, and they don't have a passionate relationship to music. New music is usually discovered more or less at random.

The Technical Listener / The Music Critic:
People who have a technical approach to music; recognizing the instruments that are used, technical details about songs and sound. How does the song, the speakers or cans sound from a technical point of view are key questions. Will discover all the details that most people won't notice.

The Music Connoisseur:

People in this category know everything about music and are very familiar with multiple artists and genres. They have catalogues and discographies of different musicians and they know almost everything about their favorite artists.

The Passionate Listener:
Music isn't about technical details like crisp and well-defined treble or if the soundstage is wide or narrow. The passionate listener cares about how the music makes you feel; what emotions does various types of music and songs stirr in you?

I’m definitely a Passionate Connoisseur

As am I. I’m even sometimes all four, but 1 is a rarity. So yeah 2-4 is me

I'm pretty much all of the above. Calling myself casual in regards to music is a bit of a stretch, but there are times at work where I absolutely have ambient music playing in the background

This is the part that makes a lot of American music hard to listen to for me. The loudness wars have introduced so much clipping and resonance into mixes that it sounds like nails on a chalkboard when I hear it. Pop and rap are the absolute worst genres for this, but one of the worst examples for me was a Sturgill Simpson album.

2 and 4 depending on what mood I'm in, probably less of 3
I'm intensely passionate and knowledgeable (including technically) about the stuff I like, but I don't widen the breadth of genres much

Truth hurts, Eh?

You might like and listen to other stuff IRL, but on here, you've painted yourself as a one trick pony...

at various times i could fit into any of these categories

plus the musicians i play with would fit into all four categories as well, as reflected in our repertoire

I do it all

Have a new car and I'm not satisfied with the sound system in it. Want to put 2 10" SoloX L7X 2 Ohm W/ amp and replace all the other speakers.

I don't know if I should go 2 10" speakers or 1 12" speaker

In a lot of ways, I think I am all the above. when I was younger, I would look at album, cassette, or CD cases from front to back to find out who played what instruments and wrote the songs. if I am listening to music, one of my pet peeves is for somebody to talk to me where I can’t hear. In most cases, I prefer live music or live recordings to studio albums. And totally despise most of the newer music because that id overproduced taking away from true musicianship

Passionate. I can listen to a guy play the most technical, lengthy solo that a ton of people go apeshit for and just hate it. Like I immediately tune out and don’t give a shite about the technical prowess. Then I can listen to a band I like play something much more simplistic and get chills.
